Witchcraft Takes Center Stage At Labor Hearing

Author: John Christian Hopkins, Diné Bureau Source: Gallup Independent (NM)

Title: WITCHCRAFT TAKES CENTER STAGE AT LABOR HEARING
The oft-delayed wrongful termination hearing filed by former Child Support Enforcement employee Evangaline Logg finally began before the Navajo Labor Commission Wednesday.
Logg had been out of work on medical leave, and when she did not report to work on June 8, 2004, the date her supervisor William Nez decided her leave ended, she was considered to have voluntarily resigned her position. Logg filed a complaint alleging unlawful termination and charging Nez with harassment.
Though [Department of Justice attorney Diandra] Benally stressed that the issue before the commission was strictly about whether Logg's termination was appropriate, there was a side issue that could not be swept under the rug: witchcraft.
Nez's written statement to be "protected by withcraft" is a major element of this case, Jordan said. Such allegations can be explosive on the reservation in fact, tribal law considers it grounds for defamation to call someone a witch, [Gallup attorney David Jordan] Jordan said

Prydain (Manhattan, Scotland) - Email Me

I think it's interesting how one group of people can have completely different meanings for the same word. As much as I may think of mysef as a Witch, I would certainly not advertise that in most parts of the world. The word means so many different things to so many different people. Funny old world, isn't it. :)

Dynnys Derwydd (Lubbock, Texas) - Email Me

. . .a part of me can understand Logg's fear (one thing to remember is that even within Hispanic beliefs there is still a great deal of difference between a bruja and a curendera) , but another part of me thinks she's using "fear" to win her case instead of gaining victory through the facts of her case.
In this day and age it's still so easy for someone to throw the accusation of "witchcraft" around and get attention from the media and courts. Just think of the number of people fired from jobs because their religious views, or loss of homes, families, etc..
Yeah, sounds to me like she messed up and wants someone else to pay for her mistakes. Just as if you know you're suppose to call a phone number everyday when you're sick, that failure to do so will get you fired, yet you do fail to call, get terminated and then blame the company.
Fight with knowledge, not in ignorance.
