Navajo Cub Scout: Religion Emblem Needed

Author: Felicia Fonseca, The Associated Press Source: Yahoo

Title: NAVAJO CUB SCOUT: RELIGION EMBLEM NEEDED
When Kinlichiinii John set out to earn a religious emblem for his uniform like other Cub Scouts, he learned that none exists to acknowledge his Navajo beliefs.
Neither the traditional Navajo spiritual way of life nor the Native American Church are among the 35 religious affiliations represented in emblems approved by the Boy Scouts of America.
So 9-year-old Kinlichiinii, with the help of his family, Navajo medicine men and others, has embarked on a quest to establish Scouting's first American Indian religious emblem.

Seeker (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan) - Email Me

As a former member of Scouts Canada and a Cheif Scout of Canada Award receipient; I can say all non main stream religions fall under the Alpha / Omega Badge for the Religion in Life Badge. I do understand that this has changed in the years since I have been a member of Scouts Canada.
The current religions recognized by Scouts Canada are Anglican Church of Canada Apostolic Church of Pentecost of Canada Bahai Faith Buddhist Faith Canadian Baptist Ministries Canadian Conference of the Mennonite Brethren Churches Canadian Forces (Protestant) Canadian Unitarian Council Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Christian Science Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Canada Church of the Nazarene Community of Christ Congregational Christian Church of Canada Eastern Orthodox Church Evangelical Church of Canada Free Methodist Church Hindu Islam in Canada Jewish Religion Lutheran Churches of Canada Moravian Church of Canada Orthodox Church Pentecostal Assemblies - Requirements Chart Polish National Catholic Church of Canada The Presbyterian Church in Canada Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) Role of the Chaplain Roman Catholic Church in Canada Salvation Army Sikh The Standard Church United Church of Canada Zoroastrianism
There is a pamphlet for each of these beliefs listed on the Scouts Canada website.
I wish the young Scout the best in his quest to have his beliefs recognized by BSA as this would be one more step in getting All Faiths recognized.
Blessed Be to All

...this young man is so selfless in his Path. He has taken it onto himself to make a trail in where many do not wish to walk. He is brave, and sounds like someone I would like to call friend one day. We need more people like this in our youth. I wish nothing but the best for this young one. Brightest Blessings upon you, Mr. John...... Brightest Blessings to all!! Elwin Shadowstrider ) O (

"His time is definitely not his anymore, and he hasn't complained," she said. "But we have been telling him, this is how leaders are made."
He's only a Cub Scout, so I'm glad he has such an easy win.
The BSA is a religious organization, in the sense that the Military follows the spiritual path of Ordination. Ordination comes from the Weaver's Art, but a commander would order his troops before a battle, just as a spinster would order her threads before Weaving, and the Brethren of Mythras made it a Spiritual Art. So Religion really is quite strong, in the Boy Scouts, it's simply a religion that ought to serve all others. They worship, however, Indians, amongst whom the Navajo are quite famous, and I don't think the BSA is going to want to buck this one, for very long.
This kid's going to reverse all their efforts to keep the CotG out. The actual problem with Paganism is not the lack of National Leadership, but Paganism is a class of religion, rather than a particular religion, and any HPS could be counted as a National Leader.
Now, if they're looking for a single leader for Paganism, hmmmm, I'd have to assemble a conference: Aradia; Mythras; Isis; Santa Clause; Brigid; Agnes... I don't suppose God's Office would be required for this, but Mythras isn't more than 4, right now, so we'd have to include her Unwed Mother. I'm sure that all the above would be happy to embrace Christianity, as one more Pagan Religion.

but there used to be a Unitarian Universalist religious award recognized by BSUSA, until the UUA refused to renounce our belief that homosexuality is not some great evil to be denounced.
They pulled their recognition when the UUA refused to edtt the book for the award to reflect Mormon and other conservative Christian beliefs on that issue, instead of our own.
They may claim to be non-denominational and non-discriminatory as long as a boy has some sort of religious beliefs, but their actions scream otherwise.

Covenant of the Goddess DOES have a religious symbol for both Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. While it is not provided by the BSA, or on their list of emblems, it is acceptable to wear it on the uniform when earned. The BSA just don't want to have to provide it, I guess.
Nobody should be telling any young man they can't join Scouts because of religion. BSA is not a religious organization. We already won this one... my son Bran and his dad threatened to take them to court, and it was settled with help from Lady Liberty League. The BSA is not a Christian organization. It cannot discriminate. Not even when a pack or troop is sponsored by a church or temple.
While young men must do his "duty to God" and take a vow to be "Morally Straight" to join Scouts, the organization is completely non-denominational. They do not say which God to worship. The word God can be replaced by Allah, Buddha, Herne, etc. Boys must also learn about religion which includes respect and tolerance for other faiths. No where does it say only Abrahamic religions.
I am very proud of Mr. John for doing the work to get a religious symbol for Navajo youth. Confronting prejudice or ignorance (or even just plain being overlooked) ain't easy. It takes courage. I'm sure that this young man is a wonderful Scout.

Good for the boy scouts for letting them have the badge. It seems their requirements are reasonable - 25 scouts who are members of the church, a set of achievements to earn the badge and a design for the badge. Maybe more "pagan" religions could get their acts together and go for the badge too.
