As Uranium Firms Eye N.M., Navajos Are Wary

Author: Kari Lydersen   Source: Washington Post

Title: AS URANIUM FIRMS EYE N.M., NAVAJOS ARE WARY

Twenty years after uranium mining ceased in New Mexico amid plummeting prices for the ore, global warming and the soaring cost of oil are renewing interest in nuclear power -- and in the state's uranium belt.

At least five companies are seeking state permits to mine the uranium reserves, estimated at 500 million pounds or more, and Uranium Resources Inc. (URI), a Texas-based company, wants to reopen a uranium mill in Ambrosia Lake.

But the deposits are largely in and around Navajo land, and the industry's poor record on health and safety as it extracted tons of the ore in past decades has soured many Navajos on uranium mining. In 2005, the Navajo Nation banned uranium mining and milling on its land, and thousands of tribe members are receiving or seeking federal compensation for the health effects of past uranium exposure.

Well. Contrary to popular (uneducated) belief. Nuclear power plants are good. The mining concerns on the other hand have a bad reputation, based on how they have performed in the past. It would be nice if the pagan community could take the time to learn FACTS from reputiable sources about nuclear power. Most of the "facts" that the general public knows come from the equivelant of a chirstian clergyman explaining to his flock in depth the beliefs of pagans. Feel free to contact me on this issue.

I am strongly against the proliferation of nuclear power plants, as I'm sure all other pagans are too.
Given the US govt's record with Native Americans, I don't blame NA's one bit for not wanting to trust anyone anymore. I wouldn't either. :-/

History shows that there is little chance of anyone winning to block this, even white anglo-saxon Americans. Given the money involved, if corporations want it, they will get it, no matter how, no matter who it hurts. Even if they are delayed, or put down for now, they will continue trying until they get what they want.
We must be ever diligent about these issues.

Frankly, learning that uranium is still in the dust being blown around even today, I wouldn't even visit the area now.

Being a republican, in the purer sense of the term, I have already written to McCain headquarters to advise him of my intent not to vote for him if he is only going to add more nuclear plants, as his website says.
I would not vote for any candidate who does not intend to put our tax dollars into enviro-friendly alternative energy sources instead.

On one hand, the Navajo tribe needs a guarantee that health issues will be compensated.

On the other hand, remember that the author of the Gaia Hypothesis routinely speaks out in favor of nuclear power.

They must make sure that -all- land rights are in their favor before they argue in court.
If they don't have mineral rights, they won't be able to keep the firms out.

When the price of oil gets high enough, or when supplies become short enough, or whatever happens to make the demand for another source of power strong enough...

...you won't be able to stop them from mining it. If you try hard enough, the government will march in to take it at gunpoint. At that point, if you keep trying, they'll kill you.

Right now, you might be able to get the upper hand. Do your homework. If you can't figure it out, hire someone who can-- or find someone you trust and insist that the mining companies hire them. Demand that the stuff be mined on your terms.

Do it *now*, while you might still have the power to set the terms.

Just friendly advice from a grandchild of the coal-mine wars.
