Faith-Based Diet, Wiccan-Style

Author: Sarah White Source: CalorieLab (NV)

Title: FAITH-BASED DIET, WICCAN-STYLE
Recent reports have pegged churches as breeding grounds for obesity, largely because of the large amounts of fatty foods often served at church social events.
All this got us wondering on this Halloween’s eve: what about people with more unconventional beliefs? Is there, for example, a wiccan diet? Turns out, not too surprisingly, that there are people who have written about the preferred diet for wiccans, or, more accurately, pagans.
As paganism is normally associated with connection to nature and reverence of the earth, it makes sense that these would be the guiding principles in a wiccan or pagan diet.

Why look to the ancient world for nutritional advice? It's insane. There was a time when venison, wine and corn roughage was about all there was on the menu, but that was also before electricity, modern dentistry, women's suffrage, the abolishment of slavery, the discovery of all the planets in our solar system, and so on and so forth ad nauseum. Even now, new research is revealing dietary insights we have never had before. On the other hand, when it comes to being properly nourished by a vegan diet, you will be hard pressed to buy a single 'packaged' vegan product (breakfast cereals, breads, soy or rice milks, mock meats, etc.) that is not already thorougly or at least partially enriched with a prime assortment of essential vitamins. And that's before you get to the killer range of exotic organic produce and whole grains that end up on your vegan plate. I get more protein now than I ever did, and more calcium from my OJ and a daily multivitamin than I will ever need! Don't take my word for it--PETA or VeganOutreach would be happy to send you starter kits that explicitly detail the wide assortment of dietary options. Basically, the only deterrent USED TO BE not getting adequate amounts of B-12. They thought it could only be extracted from animal products. Turns out it can be extracted from the fermentation of molasses. God knows what else, because new research is ongoing! That's because a couple smart cookies decided to buck the naysayers and do the hard science. So now you can be totally vegan, get sh*tloads of B-12 every time you pop your vegan multivitamin, eat your morning cereal, or drink a glass of chocolate soy milk (SILK is the best!) . Let that be a lesson to all of you--it's never too late to start thinking, and continue evolving. By the way, I grew up on a ranch. That's relatively recent history, and I chucked all that in the garbage too, along with the Bible.

In all honesty, I think we need to improve the conditions for animals that we eat, but I don't see any problem in doing so myself. The ancient Indo-European peoples that were the ancient Pagans ate meat. The Celts farmed cattle for milk and meat, and other animals too. So as a Druid, I don't see it as unethical to eat animals.
Besides, it's extremely difficult to have a balanced diet without meat consumption, and veganism is harder still. Protein, iron, calcium, all difficult to get.

Veganism is the only ethical choice, if not the most practical. You need access to a decent grocery store, with a whole foods or organic section, or at the very least, mail order access to vegan-oriented companies like Pangea that sell B-12 supplements, foodstuffs, cruelty-free health and beauty products, and clothing, etc. These days, smart people turn vegan not only because factory farms are insanely cruel and deranged. They also realize that the steroid levels in even the lowest fat dairy products are a health threat. And that vegan meals leave you thoroughly nourished and comfortably full with stable or even increased energy--as opposed to meat heavy meals, that can leave you in a semi-stupor for hours, while they stalemate your digestive system. The vegan lifestyle is an extraordinary, wonderful world of new tastes, new feelings, and better quality living. I've already converted my girlfriend, my mother and an old family friend, who after double bypass surgery, a history of obesity, and the onset of diabetes is ready to try anything but what put him in that position: a lifetime of fatty and processed foods, that kill you more efficiently than cigarettes ever will.

it's because they've accepted and loved their bodies as being gifts from the Goddess and God. They know that the Gods love them no matter what they look like on the outside, so they tend not to eat due to emotional disstress. Traditional religions tend to cause alot of guilt, esspecially for women, and constantly teaches that no one is ever good enough, so many of the faithful tend to eat out of emotional turmoil. If there is a specific health component to the "Wiccan diet", it's probably the emphasis on fresh fruits and vegetables and the lower consumption of meat and processed foods. I SOOOO glad the article brought up the corn syrup fact. Dr. Andrew Weller had said on Oprah that giving your children products with corn syrup is probably the worst thing nutritionally that a parent can do. Almost every product for children has it in the ingredient list. I'm so glad that this is finally getting to the public's attention.
