More: Wiccan Plaque Installed For Fallen Fernley Soldier

Author: Associated Press Source: Las Vegas Sun (NV)

Title: WICCAN PLAQUE INSTALLED FOR FALLEN FERNLEY SOLDIER
The space on a memorial wall in Fernley for a fallen Nevada soldier is empty no longer.
A plaque with the Wiccan religious symbol was installed Monday on the Veterans' Memorial Wall at the Northern Nevada Veterans Cemetery for Sgt. Patrick Stewart.
The Nevada Army National Guardsmen and four other soldiers died Sept. 25, 2005 when their Chinook helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan.
Since then, Stewart's widow, Roberta, has been fighting to have the Department of Veterans Affairs recognize the Wiccan pentacle - a five-pointed star enclosed in a circle - for plagues and headstones at veterans' cemeteries.

Morgan Pierceheart (Boston, Massachusetts) - Email Me - Web

I'm glad this si still being kept in the news.
At some point, some people (other than those who have been involved in this fight over the last nine years) will realise this:
No one has been able to get approval by "following the rules" because the VA has been playing a shell game and rules lawyering for those nine years.
No one is trying to get listed as a national leader for Paganism or Wicca to gain fame or money.
No one is TRYING to get listed as a national leader for Paganism or Wicca, PERIOD.
The news needs to keep highlighting the illegal actions of the VA, until it is fixed, and should NEVER stop until that is the case.

I'm very glad that the family of Sgt. Stewart FINALLY have the comfort of seeing his name next to a symbol of his faith. Obviously, death is a time when we turn to our spiritual traditions to remind us that the ones we've lost are, like us, part of a greater indestructable whole.
I find it appalling that, in this supposedly "free" country, his wife was denied this comfort for so long. How bigotted and callous! The fact that Sgt. Stewart died in the service of his country makes it even more disgusting.
Hopefully, the recent shift of power in the American congress will end the unconstitutional religious censorship which has been imposed by the Christian Reich.

I have a member of my coven that just got back from Iraq, and she was a Pagan groups acting Priestess while there, and had to deal with the loss of a Wiccan soldier and injuries of others.
As an American I do not think our bill of rights says anything about BUTS...there is NO establishment of religion...and NO religious test for any governent office holder.
Fighting for equal rights is important...specially religious rights for those who made the sacrifice for their country.
And we will fight for that again, and again and again...until we win.
In Her name, Lady Terra Gazelle

Not really too much to add for something dragged out much longer than it should have been. I guess patience and persistance can sometimes pay off. Hooray!

It may seem like a small victory, but it should be celebrated. Most major victories are simply a series of small ones looked at from the perspective of hindsight.
My hat is off to Nevada for stepping up.

Although this is by no means a way to trivilize the small victory of the fallen soilder's family (I my self have served ) I see this as the State stepping up and exserting its power, much of which has been forgotten over the years especially with the bush Regieme pushing "national security his way " down everyone's throats
