Parade Honored Heroes, Loved Ones Speak Out

Author: Staff Report, Leader-Courier   Source: Reno Gazette Journal (NV)

Title: PARADE HONORED HEROES, LOVED ONES SPEAK OUT

Following the Fernley 4th of July Parade, which honored three local heroes who have gave their lives in the line of duty, two of the survivors commented on the day.

Honored that day were Nevada Army National Guard Stg., Patrick Stewart who was killed on Sept. 25, 2005, when a Chinook helicopter he was riding in was shot down by enemy fire in Afghanistan and U.S. Army Pfc. Alejandro Varela who was killed on May 19, 2007 in Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near a tank he was driving.

Also honored was Lyon County Sheriff's Deputy Michael "Mick" Serenko, who died on Feb. 20, 2004 after suffering a heart attack while transporting a domestic battery suspect to the Lyon County Jail in Yerington.

Stewart initiated a legal battle against the Veterans Administration to have the Wiccan Pentacle listed on approved emblems for government furnished headstones, markers, and plaques.

In the end she won the battle.

During her fight to have the Wiccan symbol recognized a documentary crew followed her family through the battle and a documentary has been produced entitled, "A Hero Denied."

A Real Hero Jul 19th. at 2:48:43 pm EDT

Here is a real American Hero who died for his country only to have the bible toting rich-publicans deny him the religious freedom, one of the very principles he fought and died for, deny him the symbol of his faith. My heart soars with the Pentical being added, Finally, to the list of approved symbols. I pray that no other hero who lays his/her life down for this great country will not have to go through the head/heart ache that the Steward family went through.
May Roger Steward enjoy Summerland until his return.
