Earthy Wisdom

Author: D. Brian Burghart Source: newsreview.com (NV)

Title: EARTHY WISDOM
The thing about covering paganism in the United States is that pagans, by definition, do not belong to an “organized religion.” The groups are often family based and are generally loosely knit, often only coming together for sabbats like the solstices, Yule or Samhain. My experience with pagans in Northern Nevada is that they draw aspects from traditions throughout the world, mixing the parts that resonate with the individual clans. I also notice that many pagans are students of the religious thought of many folk cultures: Celts, Norse, Native American, Asian, Egyptian and others. Paganism includes many pre-Christian polytheistic religions, but there are also Christian symbols around wherever I’ve come across people who self-identify as pagans. Paganism often has connections to not-necessarily-related philosophies like Wicca.
Pagan Pride was held Oct. 5 at Deer Park in Sparks. This was one of those rare cases where the various local clans came together to raise awareness of the area’s paganism. From the street, it looked like a gathering of the shade structures you’d see around your average rock concert. But these vendors weren’t selling burritos or beer, but the accoutrement of paganism.

I am familiar with this newspaper and this author's work. "Filet of Soul" is a series of articles wherein the author *blindly* attends various faith services and gives his uninformed opinion of the experience. The idea, as far as I can tell, is to give others a sense of what they might see, hear, and feel during a ceremony that is unfamiliar. While I usually balk at unresearched articles, this one is unresearched on purpose. Just FYI.

Having dealt with the press on matters not concerning religion and having come out looking like an idiot because the reporter decided her thoughts were more important than what I had to say, I can feel for those of you hosting Pagan events that get poor coverage in the press.
While some of the cub reporters go to school to learn their trade, too many are being hired off the street, given no training, and put to work without much if any supervision.
Having a press packet is a great idea. I also think respectful letters to the editor when the press blows it are having a positive effect. No one likes to be taken to task for their mistakes, especially those whose egos are put out there for all to see and read.

This is why we INVITED the local newspapers and TV crews to our first annual PAGAN AWARENESS DAY here in Fremont, MI....about an hour North of Grand Rapids. We had prepared what to say, and the reporters did a good job of not twisting our words.....that and the pics were good! The local paper, the FREMONT TIMES-INDICATOR, does not have stuff on their website yet, but we did make front-page! If you invite the PRESS, rather than just having them show up, usually the article is better. JMO.

At least it appears this person went in with no particular expectations. They may not've been informed, but they also did not evince any prejudices either. I kinda see the article as being rather objective. Refreshing.

You know, it might be a good idea if these so-called reporters either did their homework or found something else to do with their time. While there's nothing insulting about this article, it leaves more confusion than knowledge about Paganism.
