Secrets Only Your Witch Would Know

Author: Cintra Wilson   Source: New York Times

Title: SECRETS ONLY YOUR WITCH WOULD KNOW

Handfuls of articles have been written since the economic downturn on how, during such times of anxiety, business booms for psychics, astrologists and card readers.

Enchantments, the witchcraft store in the East Village, recently moved down the street from where it had been a landmark since 1982.

Two witches were on duty when we visited the shop: A young man who could be the fraternal twin of Wednesday Addams, who preferred to be known only as Ricky (occultists, it seems, are often cautious about giving their full names); and Kathy, a fetching, gum-chewing platinum blonde in a spiked belt, black jeans and a T-shirt sprayed down the front with escaped glitter.

A financial crash, Kathy agreed, is a good time to be in the occult business: “We’re always asked to do love stuff, but lately, it has been way more about jobs — people looking for work and protection of their monies.”

Nancy and I were shopping for luck for our literary projects.

And I'll have to pop in, say hi to the folks, and see the new place. It looks nice. The old store was cramped, but it felt homelike to me. The new store looks great too. Long Live Enchantments! Huzzah!

Manipulative magic always backfires,” she continued. “Everything you do comes back to you threefold.”

“You don’t want to mess with the order of things,” Ricky said. “Believe me, I know.”

It's great P.R., but I disagree with both these statements. Unless you are practicing the purest form of theurgy you are manipulating something, whether it's for good or bad, it's still manipulation, and we "mess with the order of things" all the time, with and without magic. If you don't want to "mess with the order of things" it's best to stay away from magic altogether.
Even manpulation through black magic is necessary when the situation justifies it, and despite being Wicca I don't buy the Three-fold Return. How do you even quantify a "three-fold return" considering most people can't connect the dots between a cause and it's effect unless it smacks them between the eyes.

I didn't even know they moved. I have to check out their store one of these days.

Yeah, Enchantments was a bit cramped at its old location. Going to have to swing by it's new place.
