Police Officer Who Claimed To See Demon Sues NYPD For Religious Discrimination

Author: Fox News   Source: Fox News

Title: POLICE OFFICER WHO CLAIMED TO SEE DEMON SUES NYPD FOR RELIGIOUS DISCRIMINATION

A police officer who allegedly once claimed to have seen a demon in police headquarters is suing the NYPD, saying brass stripped him of his badge and gun because he's too religious.

In papers filed in Manhattan Supreme Court, Lt. Dominic Maglione, 44, said he has been placed on modified duty at Brooklyn's 90th Precinct because of his "religious beliefs and practices."

Nothing To Do With Religion Mar 5th. at 2:50:23 pm EST

Mars (brooklyn, New York) - Email Me

I'm not on the nypd, but i work with nypd, and have known over the years 3 dozen officers from patrolmen to deputy inspectors.

nypd inistitutionally could not care less about your religion, or lack thereof, or whatever floats your boat in this area. a woman around the corner from me works for nypd (in fact one of my relatives is her superior officer) and is quite open about her wiccan practices. there have been voodoo officers, santeria officers, everything.

the last thing the nypd institutionally cares about is who is on your alter.

this individual's suspension is based on reasonable suspicion of sever psychological problems that could result in danger to himself and others in his capacity as an officer. the fact that his problems have a extrasensory veneer over them does not immunize this office against reasonable actions by the nypd.

there are things about the nypd to complain about. this isn't one of them.

I guess when I posted I was responding to others from the view point of medical diagnosis. I do truly believe in the fact that it's all in perspective. There are always many ways of seeing a situation. My concern was that whether one views it by a spiritual aspect or a medical one, he was suffering. And I still hope he gets whatever help he needs.

to those to whom fairies and other 'natural spirits' are a matter of course are so quick to sneer and offer medical/psychological diagnosis and evaluations of another person's non-coporeal spiritual entity...After all, any sentient creature can be either benificent or malevolent, depending on whether it wishes to help or impede you.

One man's fairy is another man's demon is a psychologist's delusional construct...not saying if any of them are real or not (or which one is right) , just that it is all a matter of perception.

I feel bad for this cop, because he went on for so long refusing help and look where it got him: a headline on Fox News. I feel bad for the guy's family who have to live with what he brought on himself. I hope he gets the healing he needs.
I am also curious when reading the other posts here, the absolute venom and vehemence some have for Christianity and Christians. I am not defending them, mind you, but what has Christianity done that you respond with such absolute hatred? It's been bugging me for the longest time and I'd love to know why.

Does It Effect The Work... Mar 4th. at 4:26:01 pm EST

Briana Highlander (Poplar Grove, Illinois) - Email Me

From other posters adding from other articles it does sound like it was effecting his work. Then by all means, he needs help. The thing that worries me though is the knee jerk reaction that it's just because he heard voices or saw something that throws him into the category of being mentally ill. I just read a study recently that came out that stated 4% of the population hears voices. Yet these people should not be categorized as mentally ill due to the fact that they lead full lives. The doctor who ran this study states they are not schizophrenic. But when someone stops eating, and there is a real worry for their health and well being, then I feel it is appropriate to help the person. My heart goes out to him in this time of need.

Angels And Demons... Mar 4th. at 1:47:54 pm EST

Mysteries Child (Garfield, Arkansas) - Email Me

I've seen them both.

My behavior surrounding the incidents did not become psychotic, which seems to be the determining factor between a paranormal experience and a psychotic episode.

His may or may not have. I'm not finding enough information to make that decision.

I will say, however, that having my construct of reality stood upon its ear at the tender age of 24 was a painful and upsetting enough process that I had no business being near a firearm, or the authority to use it, for a period of about two years undergoing the process and two more learning to cope with the world as I'd come to re-understand it.

Assuming that he is **not** psychotic-- and I am assuming-- I can only believe that enduring the process would only be more upsetting at his age. I believe it hurts, and I sympathize with him on that score, but he's probably better off without the gun at least for now.

Another Pitiable Victim….. Mar 4th. at 1:24:28 pm EST

Karl (Detroit Metro, Michigan) - Email Me - Web

….of “Abraham”ic relgionism, and its dogmatically-induced derangement.

Yes, all of the guilt/shame/fear/control-mongering foisted on the sheeple by the prelates certainly does add weight. He should be retired with honor…..and then deprogrammed.

We must never forget the young children who were victims of religionist insanity in the Tyler, Texas case of Deanna Laney back in 2004. It seems that Laney though that she was getting orders from biblegod when she murdered 2 of her own children with a rock. Of course, with all of the “divinely inspired” barbaric bilge in the biblical fables, what would one expect?

( [Web LINK] )

Laney was later found to be insane by a jury. Of course, her family and life were ruined and destroyed at that point.

The Mancini child sacrifice horror: ( [Web LINK] ) According the report, the couple planned to sacrifice 3 children on a church altar.

There are of course, many more than these, and as we know, the situation described in the original article will not, unfortunately, be the last.

Yessiree folks, step raht up and git “saved”!

The Weight Of A World.... Mar 4th. at 11:52:09 am EST

bigcat (peoria, Illinois) - Email Me

There are at least two forms of schizophrenia, one, which hits at an early age, during childhood, and another that occurs during middle age. Neither are quick processes. However neither are truly curable, but only controlled through medication and therapy. The real problem is in medication, as most, when they start feeling good will forgo treatment, and set themselves back, big time, and since these medications may also create other less pleasant side effects, it is little wonder that some would prefer to not take the meds.
He will need to be on these things and therapy for a long time.
Again, my condolences. If this incident was the only spot on an otherwise spotless record, then he deserves the retirement, although I sorrow that it was not what he had planned. And the police department lost an invaluable member as did the family, who now has the brunt of this on their shoulders.

After Reading Both Articles, Mar 4th. at 10:33:37 am EST

stalkingwolf (Bullhead City, Arizona) - Email Me

His religiosity "escalated to point where he neglected his job and schoolwork, isolated himself, did not eat and focused exclusively on religion."

He also fasted for weeks at a time, and by the time he was committed to a psychiatric ward, he had dropped 20 pounds.

"He was alarmingly thin, his skin was pale, and he was malodorous," the police records say.

He was released after two weeks, but refused to take the medication prescribed to him and blew off therapy sessions, the filing says.

I see that the Title is misleading. He has not lost his badge.
He was reassigned.
He refused to take medication and attend therapy.

According to the NYPD statement the "Demon" incident is the only
blemish on his 22 year record.
He has earned retirement with HONORS.

Hmmm... Mar 4th. at 8:55:47 am EST

arjil (Timberlake, Arkansas) - Email Me

This article didn't seem to contain enough information to damn this man as a schizophrenic or zealot.
I mean, I have seen a demon, and many other things besides- though I'm typicly savvy enough to keep my mouth shut about it in public, if I came into work one day and encountered a demon it might unhinge me a bit.
I know most people- even people who Should know about this sort of thing have a problem with accepting it as so.
It's Probably a good thing that this man has been stripped of his badge and gun as he's Probably unstable, but that is not necessarily the case.

As A Retired Police Officer Myself, Mar 4th. at 7:46:38 am EST

Jeff Kincaid (Lynchburg, Virginia) - Email Me

I am happy that NYPD identified this individual. However, as strong as the PBA is in NY, I will hazard a guess that he gets something out of this. Perhaps an extended leave while he seeks treatment. I just hate to see a guy lose his job for what may have been stress induced.

I Think It's Best He Was Stripped Of His Badge Mar 4th. at 6:03:22 am EST

Moonlight Wolf (Bradford, England) - Email Me

This guy sounds like he really needs professional help if he is suffering from mood swings and bi-polar behaviour. Being a police officer isn't exactly a job suitable for those who can be happy and smiley one minute but raving mad the next. If the courts know anything they'll throw this out and tell the guy to go and see a psychiatrist. He needs help!

IF THIS GUY.... Mar 4th. at 5:25:07 am EST

supposedly has SOOO many "mental disorders" WHYTHEHELL was he made a police officer in the FIRST place? **sheesh** talk about your ticking time-bomb! He was a disaster waiting to happen....

Fanatical Behaviour.... Mar 4th. at 3:52:59 am EST

nasionnaich (Stanchfield, Minnesota) - Email Me

Fanatical behaviour has no place in Police work, especially Religious Fanatical behaviour. First, he becomes "Born Again", then he starts fasting and ignoring his commitment to his chosen profession (which is to uphold and enforce the Laws of the City of New York) , then he starts seeing "demons" because of his fanaticism.

It is no wonder why he was stripped, not only of his duties as a police officer, but his badge and his weapon.

Who is to say that he wouldn't decide to shoot some poor sucker, just because that poor sucker is seen as a "sinner" that "Gawd wants punished"? Prostitution is supposedly punishable by death, according to some Bible Thumpers...

It's bad enough that cops pass judgment on the folks they arrest every day -- just watch "COPS" on TV and you'll see what I mean. It ain't the cop's job to judge, yet they do it anyway.

Imagine what would happen if a Holy Roller, Born Again Fanatic (of ANY religion, not just "Christianity") were allowed to pass summary judgment on they folks she arrests...basing said judgment on their personal interpretation of their particular "holy book", instead of the Laws they are supposedly sworn to uphold and enforce.

Not Part Of The Job.... Mar 3rd. at 9:21:31 pm EST

bigcat (peoria, Illinois) - Email Me

The trouble with many schizophenics is that they are often very religiously preoccupied and often hallucinate or hear voices and strange sounds, sometimes acting quite bizarrely as a result.
This is not a situation where he is being discriminated for his beliefs. It is one where he actually may pose a danger to self and others because of his delusional behavior. I certainly wouldn't lend him a gun under such circumstances. He might decide to start shooting at something he sees- or target someone he believes is an imagined enemy to him or his beliefs, and believe me, that can happen all too easily.
My condolences to both him and his family for his problem, but I feel the State acted correctly.
I hope they can get him on medication, but I feel his days on the force are over, I fear.
