Muslims Fear FBI Is Spying In Mosques

Author: Dan Herbeck Source: The Buffalo News

Title: MUSLIMS FEAR FBI IS SPYING IN MOSQUES
A coalition of Muslim-American groups claims the FBI has been planting counterterrorism spies in mosques in some U. S. cities.
Last month, 10 Muslim-American organizations threatened to stop working with the FBI on outreach efforts in the Muslim-American community.
The controversy has been growing among Muslim-Americans since February, when an Irvine, Calif., fitness instructor named Craig Monteilh told reporters that the FBI paid him to infiltrate mosques in several communities in Southern California during an investigation conducted in 2006-07.

Ok. There's no question that worse than spies from the FBI are the agent provocateurs. In fact, in the 60s it's my belief that while most of the anti-Vietnam War people were simply caring people who wanted the quagmire of the Vietnam war stopped there were FBI agent provocateurs who were trying to catch the young folks who hadn't learned patience or savvy and turn them into idiots ranting and raving about revolution.
It happened in Iowa City while I was there. And the guy who completely turned the anti-War movement there on its head was so obviously a government plant that I couldn't believe the college kids who flocked to him. The young man's desire to look macho to the chicks, I guess.
The anti-War movement was decidedly not macho. But there were a lot of good people of all ages involved. We all assumed there were spies. That was never a problem. Not really. We knew that what we were doing was the act of true patriotic Americans and love of our country was part of why we were trying to get our nation out of that senseless war.
If the Muslim community in the U.S. has not been infiltrated by agent provacateurs then they can thank their lucky stars.

Yes, there are enemies in this nation, and to this nation who would -and have used any means possible to cause havoc and death, and not all are in groups. The FBI and other agencies have kept tabs on many for years, some with good reason. Certainly the tactics have also been questionable from time to time and there is always the fear of a misuse of power, especially when something happens for which a group or groups happily take responsibility for. It is a fine line that law enforcement agencies must walk in dealing with these things. How far one can go and what force is necessary for use has never been never an easy question to answer, and the future will only make things harder. This country has been harder on its law enforcement that most, since we are sensitive to the tactics that other countries, especially the more despotic ones employ as it is far too easy to become like them. There is no such thing as perfect security. We cannot live in bubbles or cocoons protected from the outside world, nor can we pretend that we do. Neither can we give over absolute power to any agency to run carte blanche. To do either of the above would abrogate our own power as a people. We still have the right to complain and make those complaints known, and so do any who feel spied upon. But as long as they are peaceable, so the watchers will be. That they have become the target of attention is regrettable, but until that threat is ended, the watching should and will continue.

That's where the money was. Why is the FBI spying on mosques? That's where the radical Islamists are preaching.
Yes, it is reprehensible. But, as someone who lives where the 9/11 hijackers stayed before they did their deeds, I wish that someone had tipped off law enforcement about these strange new guys who had radical views when they showed up.
I'm as liberal as they come, but let's face it. There are people out there who want to kill Americans. Some of them live in America. How do you think that Pagans would be treated by radical Islamists? I don't have a problem with the 90% of Muslims who are just practicing their religion in peace. But the 10% who decide to use their religion as a justification to kill people SHOULD be stopped.

That story is not only lacking in vital details but is also mostly out of date and behind the real story. Whoever wrote it obviously has an agenda to push that has nothing to do with promoting national security. The L.A. infiltration came about becau8se local leaders, including several leaders of the very oganizations now protesting, advised their local members to avoid the FBI at all costs. They were told to give no information that might be used to "further a criminal investigation". Yep, these noble, moderate Muslim leaders had told their people that the FBI was "only interested in gathering information that could be used to form a criminal case" and that any one approached should hgave a lawyer before talking to them. IT sounds more like a mob leader telling the mobsters to clam up than a community organisation seeking to promote "cooperation" with the authorities. At least one of these five groups, CAIR, is already OFF the FBI contact list because of their association with terrorist funding. For these people to threaten to break of contact with the FBI first they have to show that they were ever cooperating to begin with. To the hard core liberal tht wrote this stinker: have you ever thought about the historical fact that now that we have access to Soviet documents we know that the entire VIetnam era "peace movement" was orchestrated out of Moscow and was infact an ENEMY WAR MACHINE comprised of a few leaders and lots of useful idiots? How do you feel about Mcarthy being a first class jerk but also being RIGHT about the infiltration of the state department?? This story give no balance at all to a story with several sides. This story shows that there are many still out there who don't CARE about these things. They carry the chip on their shoulder like a cross and all information is to be used to sell the current big lie in the name of feeling warm and fuzzy while hating their own culture. A few minute with google will give a broader picture of this story.

...The FBI has a history of fear-based responses to harmless nonconformist groups. I was an teen and young adult in the 60's, and well remember the FBI infiltrating (or trying to inflitrate -- their agents were so lame they rarely succeeded) hippie groups, communes, alternative religions, surfer clubs -- anybody who didn't have a corncob up their butt. Later, they over-reacted to the isolationist family at Ruby Ridge, to the Branch Davidians, and to the AIM, with many resultant deaths, while ignoring warnings about the People's Temple. Not so long ago they ingored reports of young Middle Eastern men taking flying lessons but not bothering to learn to land, and 9/11 resulted. The FBI is so totally clueless they couldn't find their behinds with both hands.

Firstly, it is the FBI's JOB to investigate any threats to the United States or its citizens - and using informants and undercover agents is one of their many tools in investigating these groups. Secondly, the FBI does not simply spuriously decide to investigate someone or some group simply on someone's say-so - they look into most claims and see whether or not there is a credible threat or instance of criminality (which, by the way, generally takes investigation before they can determine whether or not the information is credible) .
and thirdly, I've yet to see a good reason why the FBI should NOT be investigating them - as someone has already mentioned, an invitation was offered to go to a training camp, and several Muslim charities have been investigated both for money laundering and supporting terrorist activities (re: Holy Land charity leaders convicted late last year) .
And I think that pacifism is noble, admirable, and idealistic - and it is also incredibly naive. Honestly, I'd worry if the FBI wasn't investigating large gatherings of well-off, incredulous idealists (as they can be moulded by a charismatic leader incredibly easily) .

If the mosques are in the united states they are subject to this possibility. It really isn't illegal and honestly if they are simply practicing their faith in a peaceful manner they really have nothing to fear. If they want their faith to have a better face in public opinion then it would stand to reason they would appreciate authorities coming in to clear out those who are tainting it's image.

"Monteilh, a former convict, told the Associated Press that FBI agents had picked him up every morning for two weeks and took him to a building in Los Angeles where he learned some Arabic and learned about Islam. After that, he said, he infiltrated several mosques as an FBI informer.
He claimed that Ahmadullah Niazi, 34, of Irvine, offered to help Monteilh attend a terrorist training camp in Yemen or Afghanistan. Niazi was charged last month with perjury, misuse of a passport and other federal crimes. The FBI alleged that he is related to a bodyguard for al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden."
Two things: 1- the FBI is so desperate for undercover operatives that they're using ex-convicts with no previous exposure to Islam to infiltrate possibly radical Mosques? Oh boy, our tax dollars at work people.
2- I guess someone took the bait. I'm not gonna cry about that. If anyone has any doubts as to the essential nature of Islam, pick up the Koran and flip to any page. It's as if someone wrote a whole holy book by copying off the pages about the Hebrew invasion of Canaan a few thousand times.

that the FBI plant was invited to join a terrorist training camp? Could it be that the FBI is doing these things because followers of Islam are plotting our destruction all around the world? Dose it concern any of you the the Mosques in question were not the least bit worried with the above mentioned fact? When did paganism become part a parcel of this deranged victim mentality? Can you not get off your persecution soap box to see that we as a country have very real enemies? For the record, I dont think peacenics are evil as much as they are a bunch of weak willed, loud mouthed panzies.

Ananta Androscoggin (Greene, Maine) - Email Me

The FBI has historically placed undercover operatives, or blackmailed some of those who were already members of organizations to inform on their friends. This always seems to happen when a group is seen as "political" and doesn't have as its central goal the furtherance of the Plutocracy.
Every single peace-oriented group has been infiltrated, whether radical in outlook or not. When war is a profit center, peaceniks *obviously* are "evil." When corporate fraud on a massive scale is a profit center, any group interested in bringing sanity and honest dealings to high finance *has to* be made go away.
And when a political party is heavily concerned with packing all government agencies and our military with its own agents, whose loyalties to the Constitution and the country are suspect, any group they feel has the potential to be a useful scapegoat to distract attention to their own treasons, will be infiltrated, and abused if the agents can influence the group into foolish behavior that will serve the Party's purposes.
As you can see, I have little faith in our nation's law-enforcement agencies. I know there are thousands of honest cops, but there is no way to tell on a case-by-case basis if the one bothering you at the moment is honest or dirty, or merely a bully-with-a-badge. In Maine, for at least 25 years now, the only way a cop has been able to get into trouble for killing a citizen -- no matter how questionable the circumstances -- has been if he used his deer hunting rifle.
I don't give the benefit of the doubt to those who can use lethal force with impugnity.
