Obit: Hans Holzer, 'Amityville' Writer, Dies

Author: William Grimes, New York Times Source: San Francisco Chronicle (CA)

Title: HANS HOLZER, 'AMITYVILLE' WRITER, DIES
Hans Holzer, whose investigations into the paranormal took him to haunted houses all over the world, most notably the Long Island house that inspired "The Amityville Horror," died Sunday at his home in Manhattan. He was 89.
Mr. Holzer - who wrote more than 140 books on ghosts, the afterlife, witchcraft, extraterrestrial beings and other phenomena associated with the realm he called "the other side" - carried out his most famous investigation with the medium Ethel Johnson-Meyers in 1977. Together they roamed the house in Amityville in which a young man, Ronald DeFeo Jr., had murdered his parents and four siblings in 1974.
Hans Holzer was born in Vienna, Austria, and developed an interest in the supernatural when his uncle Henry told him stories about ghosts and fairies.

Aside from his claim about the Amityville House being haunted, etc,.which turned out to be the Lutzes lies, Holzer wrote a few books in regards to Paganism during the " occult explosion" of the late sixties and early seventies. One of these books of his I read was an attempt to sensationalize" witch wars" and, to be honest, felt badly researched. I became a Wiccan/Pagan in 1979, so I did encounter Holzer's works as well as Sybil Leek's and Dr. Martello. When I read his " The New Pagans" I felt he didn't actually study the subject and that the book was one of those bad pop books.
When he supposedly did some paranormal research on the Amityville house, he used an instant camera as "proof". Even then I knew that the instant cameras could easily fake photos and that the film was notorious for air bubbles which to someone dishonest cant claim are " spirit balls".
Hans Holzer had some good ( or at least passable) books and articles. But he was low-level, credibility-wise

Many good books. However questionable they may have been in reality, still good reads. Thanks Hans!
