Case Of Prayer At Greece N.Y. Meetings Heads To Court

Author: Meaghan M. McDermott Source: Democrat and Chronicle (NY)

Title: CASE OF PRAYER AT GREECE MEETINGS HEADS TO COURT
The ongoing battle over prayers at town of Greece board meetings heads to court this week.
Arguments are scheduled Thursday before U.S. District Judge Charles Siragusa in the federal case filed last year. Both sides are seeking summary judgment.
The lawsuit was filed by Americans United for Separation of Church and State on behalf of two Greece residents concerned by Town Board meetings being opened with explicitly Christian prayers, offered by exclusively Christian clergy.
Opening the meetings with prayer is a long-standing practice in the town, although town leaders say preference is not given to any one religion and that anyone is welcome to offer a prayer before the meetings.

Whether it is a public school or a public meeting public means all inclusive. How do we do that with the variety of belief and non belief systems in this country? Seems to me the best way to deal with the issue is a moment of silence and let each individual do what seems best to them. It's that simple.

Quoted from the article: "Joel Oster, ADF senior litigation counsel [for the christians], said the case boils down to 'the plaintiffs wanting the town to become the prayer police and tell people to whom and how they should pray.'" All I have to say about that is, if the ADF is representing the town, how could they have the intent of their opposition so wrong? I mean really, they accuse the plaintiffs of trying to tell people how to pray? I'll tell you what, if prayer is allowed at government meetings, someday, the government may tell them how to pray, and it may not be the prayer of their choosing! Really, (and I've seen this point before in other similar cases) , why is a decidedly right-wing, fundamentalist, christian organization even involved, if this is supposedly non-christian specific prayer? The 1983 SC case specifically states that prayers can not be sectarian in nature. The safest and most respectful thing to do is to skip the prayers altogether. Maybe they could all get together in the parking lot first and pray there? Or even afterwards, at somebody's house, you know, a big prayer party? But not at government meetings. -Riverspirit

While I am somewhat glad that they included a Wiccan or two, I still can't help feeling that they were "token" only, as an exhibit to point to whenever they are called on being somewhat "xtian only", which they really are as the majority of before meeting prayer sessions are. It's sort of like being the only girl in an all boy's club, and not really in a position of either pride or respect, but only there to cover their collective tails against discrimination charges. I still say that politicians should have the option of praying during the elections, but beyond that- the Government's time should be spent on government business.
