Occult Reaches Students, Staff

Author: Hannah Tyler Source: The Lantern (OH)

Title: OCCULT REACHES STUDENTS, STAFF
For some at Ohio State, the occult is a field of academic interest, but for some students it is a way of life.
Arthur Holmes, an undecided freshman, is a satanist and chaos magician. His experience with the occult has been positive, but he said that the public generally misunderstands satanism.
"We don't worship Satan as a deity. We see him as a representation of the carnal side of man and as a symbol of indulgence," he said.
A number of OSU students participate in magic as followers of religions such as satanism and wicca. Some OSU professors are also interested in magic, and specialize in fields that concentrate on it as a historical and cultural subject.

I have read the Satanic Bible. Satanists, as defined by members of the American Church of Satan, have nothing to do with Pagans. Their philosophy is 'social darwinism,' and framed by do unto others before they do unot you. I find it humerous when some people try to describe Satanists as friends of Pagans and foes of Christians. This is somewhat untrue. Consider the fact that the founder of modern Satanism thought the leaders of Christian Churches were 'good' Satanists because they had power and controlled the sheep. Think about that carefully. All those horrible, greedy preachers and priests that often get lambasted here are cheered on by Satanists as examples of a good Satanic ethic.
It should also be noted that Satanists have nothing but contempt for most Pagans. If you doubt me, go to any of their many Blogs and sites like Witchvox and read. Far too many people here seem to see Christians as our enemy and thus anyone they visualize as being anti-Christian must be our friend. This is intellectual retardation. It demonstrates a lack of critical thinking, and a total ignorance of the ideas and theology presented by Satanism, Christianity, and most types of Paganism.

First, and oldest, is the heritical christian satanist - who believes in the biblical satan as a fallen angel opposed to god - with all his demonic minions. Worship is a mockery of the catholic (or other christian) mass.
Then, there is the modern satanist who does not believe in christianity or any of its gods any more than I do. For them satan is an avatar of certain ideals and strengths, not a devil opposed to god.
I make no pretense of understanding the beliefs of the pagan satanists because I am not one of them and have not studied their beliefs very much. Just enough to know they are not the same as the christian satanists who intentionally worship evil, not hedonism and/or self-interest. The christian satanists might sacrifice humans at an orgy, I doubt that the pagan satanists would, though they might have the orgy.
How can we make this distinction clear? The use of the same name is, perhaps, unfortunate for the pagan satanists who are tarred by the brush of evil-worshipping but that's a "what is" and we need to find a way to make the differences more clear to both the pagan community and the rest of the world.

I think of the idea of the demiurge of Plato and the gnostics. Its worth reading up on, certainly, and makes a good case for the "problem of evil" in the monotheistic religions (however, by following that doctrine, makes them polytheists) .

Calm, reasoned discourse about an interesting subject. But can you just imagine this falling into the hands of a Baptist 'flock', or if the Pope read this over breakfast! If only. Be sure to check out the website for the 'Center of Study for Religion.'

Innocent people are definitely not to be harmed during Satanic ritual. Children and animals may be present because their energy is pure, but they are at no time to be harmed in any way. This is clearly stated in The Satanic Bible.
