Athens’ Wicca Presence Growing

Author: Kent Clements Source: The Post (OH)

Title: ATHENS’ WICCA PRESENCE GROWING
Editor’s note: Because of the stigma surrounding Wicca, sources are identified by their first names only.
Not many people are told they are going to hell on a regular basis, but Sabrae, an Athens resident, has heard it plenty of times over the 20 years she’s practiced Wicca. However, she said she has seen a change in the general reaction to her beliefs.
Although largely misunderstood by many, Wicca is the fastest growing religion in the country, according to the 2001 American Religion Identification Survey. The study found that Wicca’s number of adherents is doubling about every 30 months, from 8,000 in 1990 to 134,000 in 2001.

Karl (Detroit Metro, Michigan) - Email Me

….but more progress needs to be made.
As we recall, a little over a year ago, there was a brouhaha when Greek Pagans gathered at the Acropolis. They still have to contend with the Greek Orthodox Church, which is virtually the state religion. The below link is to a BBC Internet article on the events from last year:
( [Web LINK] )
The below comments from a prominent G.O. prelate exemplify the long-standing fear/control mongering and persecution perpetrated by the Church and its many mutations, against Pagans.
"They are a handful of miserable resuscitators of a degenerate dead religion who wish to return to the monstrous dark delusions of the past," said Father Efstathios Kollas, the President of Greek Clergymen.
In light of the sordid and heinous history of the church, these comments are incredible. Mr. Kollas may wish to examine these pages on the criminal legacy of the church and its dogmatic absurdities, before making any further asinine remarks:

Pagans everywhere deserve our support as they battle the tyranny of “Abraham”ic religio-statism in order to be able to exercise their Divinely-Given Freedoms and Rights.

Hey, an actual factual article!
Oh, and I'm amused that some people don't know how to check which part of the world the "Athens" in question is in, almost as much as I'm amused by pseudo-prose posted in Wren's Nest.

The first words at the top of the page, above the name of the publication, are "Athens Ohio".
Athens is primarily a college town, and having lived near there for a number of years, it is also home to the largest and oldest group of genuine Satanists I've ever found, for whatever that's worth.
In any case, it's an interesting part of Ohio for many reasons, if you're ever in the neighborhood.

Which state? Just because the paper was in Ohio that doesn't mean the article was written in Ohio.
(I'm just making a joke here, I didn't actually read the articel just the comments here)

Young Coyote (W. Hempstead, California) - Email Me

One of the better articles on Wicca for sure.
If this keeps up, maybe a few years from now there won't even be the need for articles to dispel the hateful rumors about Wicca and Paganism in general.
The fundies will still be a pain in the ass, but then again they're never happy unless they have someone to hate.

but very pleasant, with none of the oogie boogie aspects that some writers like to attach to stories like this. And it's nice to know we are growing.
