Pagan Group In Danger Of Being Dissolved

Author: Amanda Forbes Source: The Lantern (OH)

Title: PAGAN GROUP IN DANGER OF BEING DISSOLVED
Dwindling numbers and an inability to fill leadership positions is threatening to dissolve an 11-year-old student organization aimed at providing a forum to individuals who worship alternative religions.
The Pagan Student Association of OSU was created in 1997 to serve the needs of students who believe in non-traditional faiths such as Wicca, Druidism, Asatru and Goddess Worship.
Brian Blakemore, a 2003 graduate, has been with PSA since its inception and now serves as the adviser.
He said the organization is vital to people who have previously felt the need to hide their interest in pagan religions.

Not only is your average pagan or witch introverted, but also mildly anarchistic. Who has the time for backslapping, lemonade and cookies anyways? Really, what else can some other deluded person teach you? You have to teach yourself. Also, I didn't walk away from Christian churches so I could sit in the pews at a pagan 'church'. I don't want to hold hands in a circle at the UU either. Organized religion SUCKS.

First, in regard to parents, this is a university-level groups, parents do not have any jurisdiction over it (as much as some like to think they do) .
But regardless of that, there are a lot of issues dealing with student groups in general that result in groups being dissolved like this. For example, are they being overly exclusive? I'd like to think they aren't, but knowing some of the Pagan groups and other groups I've been associated with throughout the years, I do wonder if a part of this might be that they are too focused on one facet of Pagan life to the exclusion of others. I know for example that I am in an LGBTQIA group on my campus that does very little in any department but "L" and "G," and Pagan groups that focus too much on Wicca.
Advertising can also be a problem. If you don't use things like fliers and posters on campus, you're just not going to get membership and your group is going to go downhill because of it. I know on my campus there are days when the religious-based groups have sort of tabling-events, if their school does as well they should try to be a part of it.
It could just be, of course, that the actual interest has lessened. People just might not be interested in it anymore. Sad, but true.

I know a great deal of the people who make up the University Pagan group are now alumni, though there are still several active members who are students.
The sad fact of the mattter is when there aren't enough students who are either interested enough, ot the number of Pagan students shrinks, there really isn't much anyone can do.

I would be really careful about putting ANYTHING on school property, as you are only asking for a lawsuit from parents. JMO

My hubby's the adviser of a university group near here. The group is for role-playing and collectible card games, but the same principles should apply (we have problems with membership and officers, too) . I have no idea what the problem really is, so forgive me if I misread the situation.
What's going on may be a problem of people not knowing you're there. You may have to push advertising a little harder: make sure you get flyers about general meetings up (both in the dorms and at local Pagan-friendly shops if you can swing it on a no doubt tight budget) . Advertise when you do an open event, but make sure the flyers get out at least a week before (again, if you can spare the money: do a double run- one a week and a half before the event, then another set 4 or 5 days before) . If your school is okay with it, take playground chalk and write the info on the busiest sidewalks. For your biggest open event (Samhain open ritual?) , put a small ad in the student paper the Monday before if you can. Basically, just keep pushing to get noticed.
The situation with officers should straighten out when you get more members :) .
