Council Votes To Alter Prayer Policy

Author: Brian Barber   Source: Tulsa World (OK)

Title: COUNCIL VOTES TO ALTER PRAYER POLICY

Tulsa's City Council voted Thursday to change an unwritten policy so that people can name a deity when praying before the council's regular weekly meetings.

The council's previous prayer policy, which prohibited the use of the name of Jesus, Allah or other religious figures, had prompted complaints.

Prayer leaders must be from a recognized congregation within the city.

Tulsa Metropolitan Ministry Executive Director James Mishler also spoke against the change, questioning who would decide what is a "recognized congregation."

"I think the very people who have been encouraging you to make this change are going to be very uncomfortable when the priest from the Hindu temple is standing here chanting in the name of Krishna or when someone from the Wiccan community offers prayers to the earth mother," he said.

Let's make them uncomfortable.

It is, after all, by being exposed to things you are uncomfortable with that you learn, if you have any brain cells at all, to become more comfortable with them.

Who wants to offer the first invocation???

I believe the best procedure will be to bring a point of order before any invocation as to whether the City of Tulsa has recognized the congregation from which the minister comes. This will force the City to make the rules clear from the get-go, rather than allow them to assume that some congregations are "recognized" without due process of law.

As long as every religion one gets time at the podium to force their beliefs on to someone else, I am all for it and it will be good for us. They will have to see us, recognize us as active members of the community, learn about us or be called hypocrites. They want their faith in the public square then so should ours be in the public square. If their intention is to only pray to the christian god then ACLU time.
Local Pagans prepare to be in the public square to pray in the name of our gods and goddesses. If you can’t or won’t do it then we have lost this fight. You must be prepared to out yourselves, to make your selves known no more broom closets. If no one there plays their game by these new rules then they win.

" "I think the very people who have been encouraging you to make this change are going to be very uncomfortable when the priest from the Hindu temple is standing here chanting in the name of Krishna or when someone from the Wiccan community offers prayers to the earth mother," he said. "

So it's okay for the Pagan, Wiccan, Hindu citizens to be uncomfortable, but not okay for the Christians to be?

Seems to me that the rules must be the same for all. Either all may use their specific diety name (s) or none may, which is how the council is setting the rules.

Presumably those pushing to be able to name theirs will be mature enough (I can dream) to handle others naming theirs.

Or perhaps we'll be reading a story in a few months in which the rule is changed back to "no specifics allowed."

probably wasn't prepared for the furor this is going to cause. The only ones who would be offended, would be the fundies. Still, it is good for the rest of us.
