Okla. Governor Gets Student Religious-Expression Bill

Author: The Associated Press Source: First Amendment Center

Title: OKLA. GOVERNOR GETS STUDENT RELIGIOUS-EXPRESSION BILL
Gov. Brad Henry's desk is the next stop for legislation given final approval May 12 by the Oklahoma House that supporters said would protect students' rights to express their religious viewpoints in public school classrooms.
Opponents warned that the measure may have unintended consequences and could lead to classroom confrontations and disruption.

...this lets you do that isn't already under the First Amendment? I carry an index card with the First Amendment printed on it in case someone grouches at me in school for my necklace or any other pagan posessions, and if they accost me, I just flash it in their face. I'm allowed my pentacle, my Muslim buddies are allowed their scarves, and my Christian chums have their crosses. Hell, Christians even have an FCA club at school too. What more do you freakin want, people?

Thankfully, we have a governor with sort of a brain now. I'm hopeful that he will veto this piece of nonsense. If he does, maybe we can gain some karma points that Jim Inhofe lost for us. :P

Teacher: Billy! Why are you beating that other boy with stones?! Billy: Gosh, he's just one o'dem gays, and I'm expressing my Religious Beliefs!
Ok, it /may/ not get to physical violence, but in many respects the effects can be quite devastating . Schools should be safe environments for all students to attend - not just an elite few.
As far as I am aware, kids ARE able to be religious in school - just not to the point of forcing it on others. Under this type of ruling, that is exactly what they are going to be doing and defending it with "freedom of religion."
When I was in school Muslims could leave class to pray at the appointed times, in a classroom set aside from them. Christians could bring Bibles to read and form religious groups at lunch or after school. There are lots of opportunities for these people to express their faith at school while not disrespecting others.
But disrespect is exactly what is going to happen. My proof? On the National Day of Silence (a day when high school students may choose to remain silent in a peaceful show of support of their Gay and Lesbian classmates who may feel unable to speak through the whole school year) one Christian kid decided to wear a t-shirt denouncing homosexuality with death-threats. The principal forced him to remove it and suspended him for a day. The student sued; the principal was trampling his "religious rights."
The student won.

I fail to see how making a law guaranteeing freedom of religious expression in school will make "Oklahoma seem, or at least their Governor, an ignorant back water place of no consequence," especially compared to North Carolina. Go down and read all of ecstaticlght's comment. This bill will allow Christians to wear crosses and carry bibles, yes; but it also allows Wiccans to wear pentacles, Norse and Heathens to wear Thor's hammer. Some of our legislators are fanatics, yes; but I firmly believe this bill will help all students, not just the Christian ones.

"This will make a statement to the students of Oklahoma that we support you," said Rep. Mike Reynolds, R-Oklahoma City. "America is a Christian nation."
I think that says it all.

Isn't this what the "Founding Fathers" of our great country were trying to get away from?? When one group of people is allowed to force others to listen to them, as will be the case here, you are only asking for trouble. When a group of Radical Christians gang up on a few Wiccans or Asatru students, what do you think will happen? Oh....yeah.....that's when the teacher steps in? Hmmmm.....doubtful. Keep an eye on this folks, for if it passes there, it could be a sign of things to come for our children.
On a seperate note, does anyone know of any Pagan Student groups in our Public Schools?? Just wondering.

"America is a Christian nation" eh? I don't think that is the case, as I don't see anything in the Constitution that says anything of the kind...
**looks the Constitution over again**
Nope...nothing in there about that at all....
I say Oklahoma needs to remember the religious freedoms granted in our federal charter. Freedoms that say we don't have to put up with an elected official forcing his religion down others throats. Might even be grounds to have him dismissed for creating a conflict of interest with his job...which is to uphold the Constitution of these United States...
Oh yea......I forgot.......what Constitution??

Sounds to me that they should be more worried about overbearing School administrations. They don't really need new laws. just keep to the ones they already have and clarify their meanings a bit.
