Okla. Town OKs Money For Jesus Statue On City Sidewalk

Author: The Associated Press Source: First Amendment Center Online

Title: OKLA. TOWN OKS MONEY FOR JESUS STATUE ON CITY SIDEWALK
A decade ago, the city of Edmond was forced to pay more than $200,000 in legal fees after losing a court battle to keep a cross on its city seal.
Just last year, a city art commission backed down from a decision to use public funds on a statue of Moses at Edmond's First Christian Church.
Now, the same commission in this conservative suburb north of Oklahoma City is moving full speed ahead with plans to use public funds to erect a statue of Jesus Christ on a city sidewalk in front of a downtown business just in time for Christmas.

David Eagan (Cleveland, Ohio) - Email Me - Web

If nothing else the people of this community should understand that this is a waste of tax dollars by their elected officials. Regardless of your opinion of public endorsement of religion and whether or not they win, this is a commitment of more than the $3,000 in public funds, its a commitment to costly litigation in defense of a legally ignorant attack on a well established area of law. The establishment clause has been too heavily litigated for a direct attack like this to make any ground.
If you are the type that believes that the state should promote Christianity then this type of Quixotic action only further cements the legal precedent that stands against your position. Its a loose loose situation that is at best a cynical attempt by an elected official to get votes out of pandering to the electorate.

I'm just glad I'm not paying taxes there. I'm sure these people know better. They're just trying to see how much they can get away with. "Pushin' it," as they say.

Boy, I'm glad I don't live in the Bible Belt. It's hard enough here in NJ. I think it's nuts that in the Bible Belt there are Christian churches that use live snakes in regular masses and as tests of faith, while these same practitioners say Witches abuse animals and are evil. geezzz There's no reasoning with such people. shudder...
