Monument To The Ten Commandments Still Controversial

Author: Ed Doney Source: KFOR (OK)

Title: MONUMENT TO THE TEN COMMANDMENTS STILL CONTROVERSIAL
Controversy continues to build over an effort to construct a monument of the ten commandments at the Oklahoma State Capitol.
State representative Mike Ritze, the author of House Bill 1330, wants to use $10,000 of his own money to showcase the monument.
State representative Wallace Collins says he will vote 'no' on the bill for several reasons.
"If we allow him to do this, then what if a group of wiccans wants to put a monument out there for devil worship?" Collins says. "Then how could we say no."

With the help of a friend, I managed to locate the E-Mail address of Representative Collins and sent him this response:
Representative Collins,
I do not live in the state of Oklahoma but, I have many friends that do live in your great state. While I appreciate your desire to protect religious liberty by voting no on the proposed monument, this is not the reason for my E-Mail today. I am writing you today because of a comment you made to Ed Doney of KFOR that was posted on the 16th. You are quoted as saying:
"If we allow him to do this, then what if a group of wiccans wants to put a monument out there for devil worship?" Collins says. "Then how could we say no."
I appreciate the desire for fairness but I am concerned with the first part of your quote. Many religions, including Catholicism, have their share of misconceptions and what I hope to accomplish with this E-Mail is to shed some light on one of the biggest misconceptions about my religion. Yes, I am Wiccan. The biggest misconception about Wiccans is that we worship the Devil. This is not true as we do not believe in the Devil. People who worship the Devil are Satanists and should not be confused with Wiccans. Wicca is a branch of Paganism (just as Catholicism is a branch of Christianity) and a nature based religion that seeks harmony with the Earth and those who dwell on her surface. Devil worship has no place in my religion. If this message has managed to educate you on the fact that Pagans do not worship the Devil and clears up that misconception, it has done its job. If you ever have any questions about Paganism or Wicca, please feel free to send me an E-Mail and I will be more than happy to answer them. Thank you for taking the time to read this message and I will not take up any more of your time.
Respectfully,
Preston Hudson Blessed Be
It is my hope that this response was read by the Representative. If it was not, then I know that I have made an attempt to educate someone.

It's funny to me that no matter how many times wiccan/pagans say it, it doesn't ever get through to them that their religion created this evil deity called "Satan" but hey I guess thats all they know, anything thats not about their religious beliefs they cant understand, there should be no monument for the ten commandments unless there are monuments for all religions...

In the spirit of religious freedom and liberty, and to uphold the Constitution, I have no issue with the “monument” as long as: 1. Not one penny of federal, state or local funds are ever to be spent on the upkeep , maintenance, erection or purchase 2. Space used by the monument will be “Rented” space and tax laws enforced 3. The city assessor will apply a tax on the “value of the property” as with other private properties 4. A 50 foot area around the monument be maintained without the usage of federal, state or local funds and that it shall be taxed as “rented property”
The separation of Church and State must always be maintained and upheld.
If they want a man made "monument" let them pay for it.
I prefer Nature itself, what better way of reminding us of Divinity! (and it costs nothing)

. . .to the arrogance of many Christians! Or maybe I should say ignorance?
The law codes of the Pentateuch are nothing more than a adulterated version of the Code of Hammurapi.
The legend of Yeshua has innumerable similarities with those of Mithras; a virgin birth, healing of the sick and lame, raising of the dead and eventual death and resurrection. Just as the idea of a battle between good and evil comes from the same source, Zoroasterism.
The idea of a world that is essentially evil comes from the ancient Gnostics.
The ideal of "Equality Under Law" comes from democratic and pagan Athens, not the Bible.
Wiccans as worshippers of Satan? I would think that lie has been argued, but when many fundamentalist Christians think that every religion but the Way are products of Satan, then point isn't moot, but decided upon by a flock of sheep.
Christians wonder why they are attacked, when they attack and defame any and everything that does not fit in their religious view.

Yes, the Xian fundies are at it again with their “only true” “10 commandments”.

……He says the ten commandments go back 3,500 years and are an important part of our legal history…….

The pentateuch was fabricated in the 6th century BCE, along with the other Hebrew “history”.

Yes, those “devil-worshipping”, “baby-eating” Wiccans are sure nasty, aren’t they? Absurd statements such as these demonstrate the appalling and abysmal ignorance of bible-belt fundies beyond the shadow of a doubt, do they not?
[QUOTE=cited article]
……Ritze says he would showcase the King James version of the commandments because that version passed a Supreme Court challenge in Texas back in 2005……

I hate to disappoint you, Mr. Ritze, but the Pagans had it well before you had your KJV:
42 Negative Confessions from the Papyrus of Ani ~ c. 1240 BCE
1. Not have I done wrong. 2. Not have I despoiled. 3. Not have I robbed. * 4. Not have I slain men: twice. * 5. Not have I defrauded the offerings. 6. Not have I diminished [oblations]. 7. Not have I despoiled the things of the god. 8. Not have I spoken lies. * 9. Not have I carried off food. 10 Not have I afflicted [any] 11. Not have I committed fornication. * 12. Not have I made to weep. 13. Not have I eaten my heart. 14. Not have I transgressed. 15. Not have I acted deceitfully. 16. Not have I desolated ploughed lands. 17. Not have I been an eavesdropper. 18. Not have I set my mouth in motion [against any man]. * 19. Not have I raged except with a cause. 20. Not have I defiled the wife of a man. * 21. Not have I defiled the husband of a woman. * 22. Not have I polluted myself. 23. Not have I caused terror. 24. Not have I committed offense 25. Not have I inflamed myself with rage. 26. Not have I made deaf myself to the words of right and truth. * 27. Not have I caused grief. 28. Not have I acted insolently. 29. Not have I stirred up strife. 30. Not have I judged hastily. 31. Not have I been an eavesdropper. 32. Not have I multiplied my words upon words. 33. Not have I harmed, not have I done evil. 34. Not have I made curses of the king. 35. Not have I fouled water. 36. Not have I made haughty my voice. 37. Not have I have I cursed God. * 38. Not have I committed theft. * 39. Not have I defrauded the offerings of the gods. 40. Not have I carried away offerings from the beatified ones. 41. Not have I carried off the food of the infant, not have I sinned against the god of the town. 42. Not have I slaughtered the cattle divine.
You fundies should recognize the ones with an asterisk. You may also want to point out #35 to your cronies in industry.
NO religious monuments belong in any public building, period.

Actually, that pair of sentences by Wallace Collins pretty much says it all. "If we allow him to do this, then what if a group of Wiccans wants to put a monument out there for devil worship? How could we say no?" Despite what he'd say, that is most likely the real reason he would turn down such a monument. Not for liberty or justice, but to keep a bunch of devil worshippers from putting up a monument of their own. It seems that no politician can possibly imagine that maybe- no religious monument at all on public ground is a better choice.
