Court Says Ten Commandments Monument Endorses Religion

Author: AP   Source: WLTX

Title: COURT SAYS TEN COMMANDMENTS MONUMENT ENDORSES RELIGION

A federal appeals court has ruled that a Ten Commandments monument outside Oklahoma's Haskell County Courthouse "has the primary effect of endorsing religion."

The latest ruling prompted Haskell County Commissioner Mitch Worsham to say, "Whoever was the judge in this, I feel sorry for him on Judgment Day."

I live in Oklahoma and our state seal is a pentacle, and I would not like for them to change it or move it. Its the seal on all of our state issued liscenses and the health department posts it outside restaurants to let us know what they scored in their inspection. I love that and I would not like for someone to take it down.

I just try to be compassionate to others. None of us like to see the ten commandments as the judge is advising us that we can pay our $200 with three months, but I bet a lot of people do not appreaciate standing in the middle of the pentacile in many Oklahoma court room floors hearing the same story.

Thanks and blessed be!

Did anyone other than me think to themselves that this headline should have read "In Commandment Case, Court States the Obvious. Again."?

No killing, no stealing, no lying...those are okay. The rest are pure endorsement, without question.

...are all the xtians that are making such a big deal about the ten commandments thing YET again a bunch of complete knuckleheads? Umm...last I checked, the ten commandments are a set of JEWISH RULES. I just don't get this. When JC came forth and attempted to talk simple common sense to a bunch of idiots as it were, he reset the dial, said to ignore the 10 rules, said just worry about "Do onto others..." and treat others as you'd like to be treated. Made it pretty straight forward and simple. So WHAT HAPPENED? You'd think they would refer to (oh I don't know) to the NEW TESTAMENT for crying out loud. What a bunch of total morons. Wow. Just wow...

BELOW the full article.

I saw one blaming all the world's problems on the "Heathens" out there, and that when the time comes the person would be right out there "killing the enemy".

It's quite obvious the monument endorses their religion. Otherwise, all those nutcases wouldn't be so upset that they will (hopefully) have to remove it.

of the commonality of the Ten Commandments to all societies:

firstly, Which version? the two different ones in Exodus, or in Deuteronomy?

1. No Other gods = No secular purpose, FAIL.

2. graven idols = No secular purpose, FAIL.

3. Taking teh Name in vain = No secular purpose, FAIL.

4. Remember the Sabbath = which day of the week?

5. Honour your parents = only if they deserve it.

6. You shall not murder = fair enough.

7. No adultery = what about polygamous relationships? There are plenty of cultures that endorse that view.

8. You shall not steal = Basis of the social contract, otherwise society cannot function. Fair enough.

9. No Lying = see No. 8.

10. No coveting your neighbor, neighbor's wife, etc. = more specific version of No. 8. But this gets into the concept of thoughtcrime, which (so long as one does not act on it) is entirely unenforceable and really has no secular purpose. so, FAIL.

So, of the 10, you can have 6, 8, 9 without discussion; 4, 5, 7 after hammering out an equitable solution between all interested parties (good luck with that) ; and 1, 2, 3, and 10 are right out.

So, we're left with 3 out of 10, which are found entirely in the idea of social contract theory (check out Hobbes & Locke for more on this, they were huge influences on the Founding Fathers) .

So, no, the 10 Commandments do not form a secular purpose, and the judge was correct in his judgement.

It totally and completely endorses religion. And as such, is not constitutional. Bottom line.

Endorse Religion? Jun 9th. at 10:16:25 pm EDT

Emerald Tiger (Jamestown, North Dakota) - Email Me

Yes it does endorse a religious point of view. IN A WAY.

What has been over loooked in this whole arguement is the social rules that are set forth. They have focused on the SOURCE and not the CONTENT.

However, you look beyond the grouping that "requires" worship of one god and religious observance of a "day of rest" then what is left are basic ground rules for ANY society.

Yes, in a way it does endorse a religious view. Particularly a monotheistic point of view.

What is OVERLOOKED in the commandment argument is that almost all societies subscribe to parts of the Commandments. If we look beyond the religious ones (which, depending on which grouping you look at and there are three groupings listed in their sacred texts) ALMOST ALL societies subscribe to the ones or societal order, don't kill, don't steal, don't covet, don't lie, aren't these all at the root of most of all our our societal rules of conduct?

And even if we do include the one concerning the 'day of rest', doesn't that make sense from a psychological point of view. I mean don't we ALL at least deserve at least ONE day to refresh both mind and body.

The one's concerning worship? Does not our own Rede proscribe that at least once a month taking time to honor the Goddess?

Honor your father and mother? Even if we do not actually get along with our biological parants, we ALL have someone in our lives that fill the role of Mother and Father, and we honor them.

WHEN will we ALL realize that we have so much more in common than is different.

Get workers to remove it in the middle of the night. Bonus points if they leave a copy of "Origin of the Species" behind to rub it in.

That sure refutes the court's decision! LOL

The fact that they are refusing to take it down certainly speaks volumes. Yes, it was promoting religion big time. I'm glad they ruled against it being where it was. I hope that they can be made to remove the thing.
