Title: WEALTH THAT STEALS THE SOUL
It’s Sunday afternoon and an unusual hubbub signals something strange in these backyards five blocks above the library. A bear is walking along, nibbling trees, ambling across a tennis court, finally ending up in its favorite cherry tree, where, as a dozen neighbors gather only 20 feet away to snap future screensavers, it nibbles, scarce casting a glance at us.
A week later, about midnight, same area, I see what looks like litter and my car passes over it, but at the last second I see it’s an owl. I stop and walk back. The small bird is laying on its side in the road. Another car is coming, so I take owl up in my hands and move to the side of the road. It soon stands up, taking hold of a finger, and checks out its world. It seems like an adolescent, eight inches tall. In time, it flies up on a big limb ten feet from me and sits there for an hour, longer.
We “talk,” which means we hang out in the same space and I listen and keep looking at its beauty and my little world is full of importance, but I don’t think this creature has much to say about it. But he and the bear are definitely saying, folks, you’re in our environment and you leave a big footprint.

Yada yada yada!
This guy may have some good points but as my opinion of him as a person is that I needed a shower after I read it.
So he was a hippy dude until he was "seduced" (note his avoidence of responsibility) into being, of all things, a real estate developer. Now he has his big house and fine car etc. etc and decides to demonize the people who do as he has already done.
He does not talk of balance, he does not talk of being responsible. No, he vents his self hatred on OTHERS, not even having the courage to cry Mea Culpa!
He has trampled over the Earth with a size 15 footprint and now wants to pee all over those around him just living in the footprint HE created. To this kind of fool a beaver dam is natural and wonderful, no matter the destruction it causes in other creatures environments. And each sping when many of them are washed away the flash floods produce even more damage. but that is "natural". The answer is simple, he does not love animals so much as hate people. The PROBLEM with people is our not being RESPONSIBLE and balanced in our ways or rather not more than we are which tends to be just barely.
I predict that if he actually ever does fufil his promise to "go back to the land" and live in a teepee he will last about two weeks; with no hot water and never being completely clean and all the other creature comforts being the ultimate tool user brings. When he was playing at being a hippy he still had the whole range of comforts and technologies that human society can give just down the road in town. I would love to see this guy move out into the woods miles from the roads and LIVE there for a year. It might not help his self hatered but at least he MIGHT come to a better understanding of his own arrogance. It is not that we overspill our "place" and bring havoc, ALL creatures do that. The only natural balance in nature is a shifting one from one point of equilibrium to another.
We have it in our power to anticipate consequences; the tragidy is that we don't do it more often, not that we exist at all!
I am so tired of the humans are evil fools causing more tension and KEEPING the ones with the power antagonised so that solutions are HARDER to find and impliment.
Could it be that it was not our "evil" society that "seduced" him but his own greed that kept him form CARING about what he was doing in pursuit of his Lexus and fine house. Then when he had them he suddenly remembered his earlier self and in self denial now spends his time demonizing those that are just like HE was. I also noticed that he says NOTHING, not a word about what he does to minimise his impact. Shall we observe his house. does he hang his laundry to dry? are there ever lights burning when no-one needs them? What kind of vehicle does he drive? How far does he commute to work?
Judge these people by their fruits, not their words. Is he sincere in HIS life about his words or are they just hot air he uses to sooth his aching heart? Or is he like the PETA fools in England recently who released dozens of mink from a farm, somehow ignorant of the total havoc they would wreak on the surrounding wildlife. Oh, and this groups DID IT TWICE, even after that saw the results they DID IT AGAIN! They care not a fig for animals, they just hate people, ultimately they hate themselves.

For the comic strip Over the Hedge, but of course OtH came first. So I guess it isn't the article, but the premise of the article also being the premise of the comic strip. It's 12:30 AM, and I got up at 7:30. It makes sense to me.

It's nice to see a local get his piece mentioned here.
I whole-heartedly concur with him, the animals were here first. We have them come down into our town too, lots of furry and feathered friends that knock over garbage cans, scare college students, and make me cheer to hear that they are at least alive and well.
