County Commissioner Faces Recall Vote

Author: The Associated Press Source: The Register-Guard (OR)

Title: COUNTY COMMISSIONER FACES RECALL VOTE
Enough valid signatures have been gathered to force a recall vote of Douglas County Commissioner Marilyn Kittelman, who opposed a museum exhibit based on the Greek goddess of youth.
The recall organizers, led by Donald Keogh, submitted more than the required 5,714 valid signatures, County Clerk Barbara Nielsen said Thursday.
Kittelman has until 5 p.m. Monday either to resign or release a statement arguing why she should not be recalled.
Within weeks of taking office in January 2005, Kittelman joined other commissioners in quashing the Hebe exhibit at the Douglas County Museum.

See this article for a much better take on this issue here:
Exhibition of Greek Goddess Cancelled, Then Approved [Web LINK]
According to the article "In 1908, the Women's Christian Temperance Union erected a statue of Hebe in the downtown area, ... The group intented the statute to serve as an admonition for townspeople to choose water over wine."
How ironic is that?

The color black, the perfect symbol of everything and nothingness, a symbol of extreme fullness and ultimate void, stark beauty and the most grotesque ugliness. I would love to mail this commissioner a plain black card with a bouquet of dead flowers, painted black, to celebrate the occasion. Don't worry, I don't have her address. But if I did, it would be to express that everything she believes in amounts to nothing. But out of chaos and ultimate darkness she can also find the key to knowledge of all things, and be new again. Then again, perhaps not. She might need a brain transplant.

I was resident in Douglas County when this person was on the ballot, actively campaigned against her, and sadly saw her opponent - a sane fellow, overall - go down to defeat in this predominantly evangelical, Jesus-uber-alles district. The anti-Hebe campaign she then undertook was ludicrous on so many levels - religious, artistic, generally educated, you name it.
And her mucking about with the info in the Health Department was sad and sorry from the outset.
I'm glad to see her in the sights of a recall. Douglas County being Douglas County...well...I am not hopeful, exactly, knowing the lay of the land...but I do hope the discussion will bring out this woman's inclination toward the wingnuttier end of the political spectrum.

In this day and age of electronic wizardy, of COURSE voting is going to be a prime target!
We are going to see more and more examples of this,...voter fraud due to manipulation of the voting programs.
We NEED a paper trail, not just an electronic number systen that can be subdued to fit the whims of those who control it!
DEMAND a voting system with ACCOUNTABILITY!

Apparently someone took offense to not being offended. I wish someone would ask what the public actually thought before making up their minds for them.

This person needs to be recalled. The museum exhibit wasn't ment to convert anybody but was rather an educational endeavor. Furthermore, any public figure who acts in a similar fashion should be challenged. Not wanting to upset Christians is no excuse for stopping the exhiibit. Would she stop an exhibit if it were to upset Pagans ? I think not.
