On Our Streets, A Family Circle -- And Circles Of Hell

Author: Jeff Baker Source: The Oregonian

Title: ON OUR STREETS, A FAMILY CIRCLE -- AND CIRCLES OF HELL
"This is where the Circle of Seven was, right about here," Rene Denfeld says, pointing to an open area. "There was a Wiccan star on that wall and graffiti all over these pillars. I think you might still be able to see 'Shadowcat' on one of them."
You can't. The graffiti has been scrubbed off and painted over. There's no longer any trace of the Circle of Seven, where almost four years ago a street family took turns beating a young woman before three of them led her across the Willamette River and killed her. One of the murderers called herself Shadowcat, a name she chose after she decided that sleeping on cardboard under an overpass was better than attending Pacific University.
There's no way to know anything horrible happened here unless you already knew.
Denfeld knows, and she doesn't want anyone to forget. Her new book "All God's Children: Inside the Dark and Violent World of America's Street Families" (PublicAffairs, $26, 306 pages) describes in graphic detail Williams' death and other murders involving street families in Portland.
Denfeld writes that many of the teenagers and young adults who live on America's streets have organized into families that "are a unique creation of street kids, combining elements of fantasy games, Dungeons and Dragons, prison codes, punk fashion and pagan religions."

I'd see these kids (kids like these, not these specific ones) on the streets. They'd be pan-handling for change and such. Reading this story, it just makes me think how blind we can be to what is right in front of us. Each of the spots mentioned in the article I know well...these aren't bad areas or run down. Downtown Portland is one of the cleanest cities in the US for it's size. It has it's areas that are rough, but some of the locations mentioned her you'd never expect something like this to be happening. A good message for all of us.

The sad part is that she could have been describing any number of vampire houses around the world. The main difference is that the vampires in them are largely sane and wouldn't do these murders.

. . .a "Wiccan star" is a bit extraneous. I mean, whenever someone hears the "voice of God" and kills someone, does the police or media automatically assume, "Being a Christian did this!"
Supposition, recrimination and pure ignorance. If you know not what you speak of, then keep your mouths closed.
Fight with knowledge, not in ignorance.
