The Return Of Hebe

Author: Chelsea Duncan   Source: News-Review (OR)

Title: THE RETURN OF HEBE

Roseburg residents have endured continual controversy, national attention and a week of utter anticipation. So, was she worth it?

The crowd that filled Eagles Park in downtown Roseburg Sunday to watch Hebe’s dedication seemed to think so.

After a few ceremonial speeches, finely sung ballads and sprinkles of rain, the Greek goddess of youth was freed from the dark shroud wound round her form and presented for all to see.

There were no protesters or other detractors wishing to debate the statue’s revival, which has been a source of controversy since organizers started working toward her return several years ago. Those against placing the statue have argued that Hebe and her pagan roots represent immorality and anti-Christian values.

Yes, it is a nice statue. And it represents everything Fundie Christianity is seemingly so set against:

Youthfulness, Tolerance, Rebirth -- and Hospitality.

The people of Roseburg, and Douglas County, Oregon, can hold their heads high.

Thanks for sharing this, it's nice to see communities enjoying a natural perspective on things again and taking a much needed time out from all of the garbage going on in the world. Blessed Be!

Really Nice Article Oct 2nd. at 10:54:50 pm EDT

What I thought was telling is that there was only one sentence about the "protests" and their cause. All else was focused on how pleasant and welcome the statue is. I like that.

I think this is really cool. I liked the article as well.....I'm glad that no protesters showed up and I'm glad the dogs, aardvarks and pigs will have water......oh and the humans too.
