Farm Wedding Proponents Threaten Lawsuit

Author: Kate Paul   Source: KTVZ.com (OR)

Title: FARM WEDDING PROPONENTS THREATEN LAWSUIT

It's been an ongoing fight between Deschutes County and some rural property owners for over a year.

And now the county's opposition to allowing weddings on farm-zoned land has prompted one Redmond-area ranch in the business to threaten a lawsuit, claiming religious bias.

The owners of the Flying Diamond Ranch say they just don't see what the harm is in having a wedding in a rural setting, and they have recently become suspicious of religious discrimination.

Weddings Zoned Out? Jun 9th. at 5:15:25 pm EDT

Ahr-Ohn (Bridgeport, Connecticut) - Email Me

Solemnization of a Marriage, under Heaven, would be a religious activity, which might be conducted in any home. The actual matter of Parking and Traffic would be covered under Freedom of Assembly.

It sounds like the county is concerned with the Catering of the Wedding, as a taxable issue. The coffee shop attendance, perainant unto Weddings and Funerals, is going to have a positive impact, even where the farm pays no extra taxes.

40 acres isn't a real ranch, or they'd have room for a family burial area, and could dedicate an attached Chapel. They can't be trying to farm something that small.

Being in Kansas, I know this time of year there are a lot of weddings and not all of them are held in a church here. Some are at the public park (either rent a shelter or just show up and take your chance) some are at the farms surrounding the town and some are in homes in town. Most farms here have at LEAST 2 miles between homes, far enough that you are not going to be bothered by noise or traffic because most have room for parking.

It sounds like the zoning commity is wanting money, fair and square and in small towns that is a normal battle. I know, we have our own far share out here.

Let me get this straight, paintball and golf are connected enough to farming to be alright....but weddings aren't?

I probably don't even want to know where that community logic comes from.

The only concern should be vehicle traffic, so maybe they need to cap the number of guests permitted but...they can't outlaw rural weddings.

You Can't "zone" A Wedding. Jun 9th. at 5:44:59 am EDT

Roy Linford Adams (Buxton, Maine) - Email Me

If I wasn't already married, I would have taken my wife there and married her. We were married right on our property, which is a rural setting.

But isn't there a constitutional right to get married wherever you want so long as there's permission from the land owner? Personally I would publicaly tell the zoning commitee to "Get bent!". But I highly doubt any of this is based on religion. This is the result of the zoning commitee not being able to get their hands into the wedding money Pure And Simple. It cost more money for a wedding in town than out in a field. And somewhere, the zoming commitee people have a hand in the business where they make a sizable gain from the law. After all, that's why 75% of all town laws are made, to make money for the ones who wrote the law.

Take Two.... Jun 9th. at 12:58:44 am EDT

nasionnaich (Stanchfield, Minnesota) - Email Me

Dang it... I forgot to include this....

What the heck do things such as paintball, golf courses and shooting ranges have to do with farming? The folks opposed to holding weddings in rural "farming" areas claim that weddings are not related to farming -- yet they allow paintball, golf courses and shooting ranges.

That's the illogical part of the whole thing.

Zoning For "Weddings"?!!??!? Jun 9th. at 12:52:42 am EDT

nasionnaich (Stanchfield, Minnesota) - Email Me

"Opponents argue large rural weddings shouldn't be allowed because they have no connection to farming and disrupt a tranquil way of life with noise, dust and traffic, among other things."

I'm with a previous poster here -- this is not only illogical, it is stupidity in action.

In the rural (still technically farming) area where I live, large outdoor weddings are not a problem. People shooting fireworks after midnight when it isn't even close to being July 4th, not paying any real attention to what direction the gun is pointed during "target practice" (my house was hit a few years back) , dogs running loose everywhere, people riding ATVs wherever they want to - because they somehow "have the right" to ride on property which is not theirs... Those are the sort of problems we have here.

Oh, and we have large outdoor weddings around every year, and they are not all held at a church.

That "ranch" is located on 40 acres of rural land. Plenty of room for guest parking ***and*** enough "buffer" space so the neighbors aren't "offended" by noise.

If the people in that area really want to lead a "tranquil way of life" without noise, dust and traffic -- they should tear up all of the local roads. That way they can keep all the noise, dust and traffic out of the area.

Or maybe the neighbors are just jealous because they haven't been invited to the weddings.

You've Got To Be Kidding Me. Jun 8th. at 7:41:27 pm EDT

Lora (Leominster, Massachusetts) - Email Me

"Opponents argue large rural weddings shouldn't be allowed because they have no connection to farming and disrupt a tranquil way of life with noise, dust and traffic, among other things. "

Are you serious?

Less than 100 years ago, when my grandmother was a kid, ALL weddings, funerals, births, and major life events occurred at home, in the family house--and in the cases of many many people in the early 1900s, that meant the family farmhouse.

Tranquil way of life? This would be the tranquil yahoos with their tranquil ATVs, the tranquil drunken turkey hunters flushing turkeys out of cornfields by means of shooting their tranquil guns at their neighbors' houses and barns? Their tranquil teenagers tranquilly cow-tipping? The tranquil crop-dusters fumigating the whole darn town every two weeks, regular? The tranquil mega-sprinkler systems rotating around the fields? The tranquil tractors spewing diesel fumes and making dust bowls out of what were once tranquil green fields? The tranquil feral dog packs because out in the countryside no one believes in fences? The tranquil way of life which is so peaceful and pleasant that the #1 cause of accidental death among farmers is suicide?

I think their neighbors are just jealous, frankly. I've seen small town folks do some nasty, nasty things to each other for no better reason. Making enough money to avoid debt and refusing to make yourself bankrupt for #2 corn are definitely more than reason enough to arouse the ire of small town folks who get worked up over anyone even a little different.

Let Them Be- Married Jun 8th. at 6:45:07 pm EDT

dragonlaurel (hot springs, Arkansas) - Email Me

I used to think that living "out in the county"- not in city limits would be a blank check to be free of zoning issues. I recently checked the zoning laws here and it's ridiculous. If they call a property agricultural the population density is so low it would be hard to notice what someone a few properties over was doing. The parking is the only thing that might be an issue and farms usually have plenty of room.
Anyone that is worried about the noise of a wedding- should listen to cows , a rooster or two, or the sound of a nice big tractor. Weddings are probably quieter than many normal farm sounds
Good luck to them!
