Druids To Embrace Winter Solstice

Author: Dana Massing Source: Goerie.com (PA)

Title: DRUIDS TO EMBRACE WINTER SOLSTICE
In the midst of December's dark days, local Druids gather to celebrate the coming of the light.
Winter solstice or Yule is the holiday they mark around Dec. 21 or 22, when the day is at its shortest and the night at its longest in the Northern Hemisphere.
This year, the winter solstice, one of two times a year when the sun is at its greatest distance from the equator, occurred today, shortly after 1 a.m.
From now until the summer solstice, on June 21 or 22, the daytime hours will grow while nighttime lessens.
"We celebrate it in remembrance of ancient times, when folks would gather together in kinship and celebrate making it this far into the year," Rachael Sewak said.

NOVA (New Brunswick, New Jersey) - Email Me

Ever since I was very young, I was attuned to the solar and lunar cycles, the seasons, etc and as an adult - counted down the hours and minutes til the days would begin to get longer again.
Then I became a Wiccan/Witch and in celebrating it with others of like-mind, the event has sadly become less personal.
In group, I must conform to the ideals of making wishes for Peace on Earth, an end to the Iraq war, Darfur, teh Bush administration, etc. BIG wishes to say the least! Not that I don't wish those thing could be, but my personal Winter Solstice has become lost in the endless group Pagan endeavor to be viewed by the world as goodly peoples.
I just want to enjoy knowing that the earth will again became bright and warm, green and flowering, fruitful and full of the sounds of fauna.
Blessed Be
