The Witch... That Wasn't!

Author: Neil Arnold (blog) Source: The Phillyist (PA)

Title: THE WITCH... THAT WASN'T!
In 1683 a woman named Margaret Mattson was accused of being a witch by her neighbors in the Wissahickon Creek Valley, a case that would become Pennsylvania's only witch-hunt, and also, rather uniquely, one that was concluded without death.
For indeed, according to local rumor, Margaret had bestowed a curse upon several cattle and also bewitched several folk, during a time when it was considered a crime to work on a Sunday, let alone dabble in the black arts.

Lady Aurora (Medford, Massachusetts) - Email Me

in deciding whether or not she was a witch.
Funny I never knew E. Sweedenborg had any clairvoyent abilities. I grew up in the Newtonville congregation of the Sweedenborg church in MA. Although I (and my family) stopped attending when I was a kid and only observed the major holidays (x-mas, easter, etc.) through my teen years, I always thought his interpretation of the Bible was slightly different from the churches I occasionally attended with friends.
And I like to point out a strange twist of fate within my family. One of my ancestores was hung in Salem - John Proctor, for being a witch, and now I am one (without any powers - bummer!)

Of course, the abundance of those members of the Society of Friends would have none of it! Sweden, at that time, was vigorously investigating the paranormal sciences -- so these "charges" would have been ridiculed by those of our citizens who immigrated to Penn's town. It probably wouldn't have gone as far as it had, but for the fact of her gender. After all, Emmanuel Swedenborg was born not long after, and was well-respected...in spite of (and because of) his tremendous paranormal gifts. I just love it when the rational and mystical sciences and arts come together with such skillful craft!
