Lehigh, Berks Counties Are At Epicenter Of Hex Sign Culture

Author: Mariella Savidge   Source: The Morning Call

Title: LEHIGH, BERKS COUNTIES ARE AT EPICENTER OF HEX SIGN CULTURE

Hex signs, many dating from before the Civil War, adorn the landscape of western Lehigh and eastern Berks counties, the epicenter of the hex sign movement. The designs, which also decorated furniture and important papers, were simply referred to as blumme and schtanne -- flowers and stars.

''Hex sign'' came later, coined as a result of the 1924 book '' Pennsylvania Beautiful,'' by Wallace Nutting. Calling them ''hexafoos,'' or witch foot, he ignited a controversy about their meaning that continues today.

They was used to ward off evil, just like the early Christian churchs in Europe painted nudes on the walls & celling to scare away Satan because HE can not stand to see a nude human body.

I live in the area to which this article is referring. My grandfather spoke PA Dutch and had a small farm of his own. He had hex signs hung on the front and sides of the barn, and painted the barn itself red. It was almost 150 years old, much older than the house, and was his pride. Sadly it burned down a few years ago, just a few years after he had passed away.

I guess I never realized that my area does have a distinct culture, and it was interesting to read the meanings behind some of these things. I grew up playing in/around the barn (got in trouble many of times!) , and I probably would have had a greater appreciation of its style if I had learned these things, among other PA Dutch customs, when I was younger.
