Feds To Condemn Land For Flight 93 Memorial

Author: The Associated Press   Source: Pittsburg Post-Gazette (PA)

Title: FEDS TO CONDEMN LAND FOR FLIGHT 93 MEMORIAL

The government will begin taking land from seven Somerset County property owners so that the Flight 93 memorial can be built in time for the 10th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks, the National Park Service said.

"We always prefer to get that land from a willing seller. And sometimes you can just not come to an agreement on certain things," park service spokesman Phil Sheridan said.

Unfitting Memorial May 8th. at 7:32:06 pm EDT

Mysteries Child (Garfield, Arkansas) - Email Me

Assuming that the folks we're memorializing here believed in something other than going down fighting, this is about the most utterly disgusting way I can think of to memorialize them.

I love my country...

...but I am also reminded that sometimes we love people/things for what they represent to us, or what we wish they were or wish they would become rather than for what they are.

Pomp and ceremony trump very basic common sense again. Passion rules reason. Welcome to America the Stupid.

Y'know, as long as they're gonna take this "eminent domain" thing and run with it, why don't they do something useful with it?
Like, say, I dunno- turn some golf courses into food gardens for the hungry?

Nah...that would be impeding on THEIR leisure.

Do We Really Need A Monster Monument? May 8th. at 9:14:45 am EDT

bigcat (peoria, Illinois) - Email Me

While it might be nice to have a memorial, why not just a small monument with a plaque rather than a whole park area set near the road where people can drive up and look at it without disturbing anyone? Then the owners probably wouldn't mind so much, because I'd hate to lose valuable acreage too, whether it be for a monument-or a strip mall that would remain ninety percent empty.

it still stinks.

Manifest Destiny was a load of horse-pucky and so is Eminent Domain. They're both theft, plain and simple.

"Eminent Domain"... May 7th. at 11:18:12 pm EDT

nasionnaich (Stanchfield, Minnesota) - Email Me

"In a statement obtained by The Associated Press, the park service said it had teamed up with a group representing the victims' families to work with landowners since before 2005 to acquire the land."

Uh-huh, as I thought. The whole thing was started during Bush 2. Most likely, the current President doesn't really know about it -- or at least didn't know about at press time.

I agree, there is no "over-riding public benefit" in this land grab. Interesting thing is, though, that this time around the land owners are not a Sovereign Nation of Native Americans (nobody seems to mind when they lose land in this manner....) .

"Eminent Domain".... It works a lot like "Manifest Destiny". It stings a bit, don't it?

dragonlaurel (hot springs, Arkansas) - Email Me

This is insane. They don't need to spend 58 million of our dollars on this when so many people are struggling to get by. Try building a small park or putting a statue there. They can make an access road through the land of someone that wants to sell for it.

What can I say? The federal government is the ultimate robber baron.

This is change we can believe in. Mission accomplished.

Money That Could Be Better Spent May 7th. at 4:48:13 pm EDT

Sickle (Mt. Jackson, Virginia) - Email Me

It makes me sad that the government thinks so highly of the dead and so little of the living. So much money will be spent on this memorial while people go cold, hungry, and remain ill. Why do the living suffer when they could be helped with the time, money, and manpower that gets utilized to keep the cemeteries manicured?

Eminent Domain May 7th. at 4:36:39 pm EDT

Earc (Nampa, Idaho) - Email Me - Web

If the government wants your property, you can either take what they're offering you for it, or have it taken from you. Supposedly, this is done only in the "public interest", but it's been used to force people off of land they've lived on for decades, that's suddenly worth a lot more than they bought it for, that is then turned over to a private developer to build a shopping mall or luxury condo complex. The only "public interest" there is the kickbacks the politicians received from the developer.

While I recognize the bravery of the acts of the passengers and crew of Flight 93, do we really need to build a memorial to them on the site of the crash, at the expense of taking land away from private landowners?
