Philadelphia Police Sued For Badgering Preacher

Author: WorldNetDaily.com   Source: WorldNetDaily.com

Title: PHILADELPHIA POLICE SUED FOR BADGERING PREACHER

A Christian evangelist who has taken the word of God's salvation offer to celebrations of homosexuality and witchcraft while calling the nation of the United States to repentance has filed a lawsuit against the city of Philadelphia and several police officials for their alleged concerted campaign to halt his speech and restrict his movements.

The lawsuit was filed by attorneys representing Michael Marcavage, who works through his Repent America ministry. They told WND the city is scheduled to be served with the complaint tomorrow.

The civil rights complaint alleges the city and its representatives have used unreasonable force, "placing their hands on plaintiff, grabbing plaintiff, putting plaintiff in a chokehold and dragging plaintiff for merely exercising his constitutionally protected rights."

The complaint explains how over multiple months and in several locations, city officers have physically barred Marcavage from locations where he wanted to carry his ministry.

Testing The Limits Jun 8th. at 9:42:03 am EDT

Terry (Irvington, Virginia) - Email Me

A Google search for { arrested OR convicted "Michael Marcavage" } returns 2550 hits. The top among those are from sites known for dishonest reporting of pretend news, and from hate cult sites.

Notable is how in 1999, then-Temple University student Michael Marcavage was sent to a hospital for an emergency psychiatric evaluation, as a result of his style of "expressing religious rights". Since then he appears to have been connected with groups that advocate murder of their religious hate targets, and to have used stunts that pose highway safety hazards or involve stalking, harassment, and disruption of other people's events, as part of his usual style of pandering sick hate cult dogma.

Such a character understandably tests the limits between the outer bounds of rights related to using religion as a cover for mental illness, and criminal acts where the style, not content, of speech are illegally disruptive, through at times posing public safety hazards.

Notable in that Google search is that most of the top 100 hits are from sites that solicit donations by means of instigating religious hatred, while very few are bona fide news organizations. Is it profitable to promote a psycho, who apparently has a long history of arrests and convictions for time, manner, and place regulated violations, and present that as if a poster child model for "family values"?

Well, This Article Was Quite Poorly Written... Jun 7th. at 1:00:06 pm EDT

Bunny Mazonas (Folkestone, England) - Email Me

Okay, that article is so vague as to be meaningless. The article gives so little information there is no way we can tell from this alone whether Mr Marcavage was peacefully, appropriately offering "salvation" to the gay and Pagan groups he encountered (which, however annoying, is legal) or whether he was actually causing harassment. I would however, like to keep in mind the mans' past record for my own personal judgement.

First, a quote from the man himself

"According to the Scriptures, it’s the government’s job to enforce God’s law and to uphold his law, and the Bible talks about how, I don’t want to really get into this — it’ll make me sound like I’m crazy — but it does talk about how [homosexuals] are to be put to death. The wages of sin is death. But I want to make [it] clear that I’m not advocating the [independent] killing of homosexuals. … I’m saying that the government’s duty is to uphold God’s law. … I know that’s harsh, but we have all broken the law, God’s law, and we need to be held accountable."

Now...

Kevin Lee, an openly gay councilman from Lansdowne, Pa., says Marcavage has:

* attacked him verbally and posted his telephone number on Repent America’s Web site, precipitating death threats
* picketed and bull-horned an Arbor Day event attended by Gov. Ed Rendell, and the opening or groundbreaking of a retirement housing facility where Marcavage objected to the politics of an affiliated minister
* harassed a child regarding abortion at a private residence that had been visited by Sen. John Kerry

Or...

In January 2005 Marcavage appeared on the Fox News program, Hannity & Colmes. Alan Colmes put it to Marcavage that "you were arrested, by the way, in 2002 trying to interfere with workers covering a Ten Commandments plaque, arrested in San Francisco for confronting same-sex couples getting marriage licenses. You have a history of being arrested at demonstrations, confronting people in situations like this, correct?". Marcavage responded: Well, that is correct. Dr. Martin Luther King was arrested many times, too. But the fact is, we were simply exercising peaceful protest in each of those examples."

He is also in queerty.com under their 20 most frightful anti-gay activists list for his past record.

But did any of you see this in the peice of grand pseudo-journalism:

"There were similar developments on June 3, 2008, on Nov. 15, 2009, and on May 3, 2009."

Now as far as I now Nov. 15 2009 hasn't happened yet, so is Mcavage perdicting the future or has sought the help of a sooth sayer. If he has all I can say is his god is very dipleased with him.

Or they are paying to much for the alumni they are highering from "Liberty" university.

Personally I think that the places where this guy shows up, the people running the gatherings should start filing harrassment charges against him. Whats good for the goose is good for the moron.

I find it hallarious that some information has been glossed over by the main stream and certain other sites about this guy and other religiouse fanatics support of the coup that happened in the military.

"A Christian evangelist who has taken the word

homosexuality and witchcraft while . . ."

This reads to me as a hint that he has perhaps made a practice of going into the meetings or religious services of the people he's against, and tried to interfere with what's going on. That in itself is grounds for being ejected. Often for a trespassing citation.

As for the San Francisco event some while back, seems to me that if Roman Catholic gays wish to stage a protest in their own church, they have much more right to do so than any group of outsiders.

One Badger To Another.... Jun 6th. at 9:50:00 am EDT

bigcat (peoria, Illinois) - Email Me

I wonder what it was he was doing that caused the police to harrass him in the first place. He was probably trying to create a scene in order to cause this controversy. I agree he should be able to believe as he chooses, the same as the rest of us, but shoving his religion forcefully in the face of others is neither a right nor a privilege. I agree with the poster who stated that if he is truly being harassed-he should contact the ACLU. Otherwise, he should just move along.

Even For World Net Daily Jun 6th. at 9:39:32 am EDT

Lorca (Longview, Washington) - Email Me

...that article displayed an unusual amount of bias.
All I have to add is that if the minister _truly_ feels that his civil liberties have been trampled upon, he should appeal to the ACLU for help. That's what they're there for and _they_ do not discriminate.

This Is A Trend Lately Jun 6th. at 5:22:51 am EDT

Moonlight Wolf (Bradford, England) - Email Me

Step 1: A member of a fundie branch of a religion goes around preaching hatred of a certain group of people (usually gays, abortion doctors, feminists or people who are not a member of their specific group) and threaten anyone who disagrees with them some form of divine or cosmic retribution of a most horrific manner. (Usually going to Hell.)

Step 2: They are called out on it by law enforcement officials, employers, colleagues or anyone who happens to hear it. They are then issued some sort of caution, told to move on or just told to tone it down a bit.

Step 3: They cry discrimination, go out and get the lawyers (bonus points if those lawyers share the same beliefs that they do.) to sue the pants off the organisation on grounds of discrimination.

Step 4: The story hits the papers and the news sites. Those like WND and the Daily Fail will decry the so-called discrimination and say that nobody stands up for God, Christians everywhere are being persecuted by the evil liberals.

Step 5: The fundies go around citing these cases as 'proof' that Christians are being discriminated against.

Step 6: (optional but worth mentioning) Occasionally a liberal newspaper will debunk the cries of persecution and may show how in fact it is many of the fundamentalists who are doing the disriminating. (The Guardian did this with the Nadia Edweida saga along with various others who came up afterwards.)

Step 7: (only if Step 6 has been undertaken) The fundies may then cite the liberal newspaper as 'proof' that Christians are being discriminated against.

I have an idea to stop this 'we Christians are being discriminated against because we cannot discriminate against those we hate' whining. Remove the veil of religious rhetoric that they use to justify their hatred and call them for what they are; homophobes, religiously intolerant, anti-abortion and misogynist.

If we remove their religious label then at least they will have less ground to stand on.

Sure 'freedom of speech' and 'freedom of religion.' But their definition of those terms is radically different from everybody else's.

As An Aside Jun 6th. at 5:17:03 am EDT

I think that whoever wrote the following line needs to take an English class:

"innocent murder of children through abortion."

That phrase is so far gone it should be taken out and shot.

(Bare in mind I'm talking about a phrase rather than a person.)

Keep in mind that this is Whirled Nut Daily, the abrahamic cults' answer to the Weekly World News and America's answer to London's Daily Mail. This guy chronically harasses innocent bystanders every day. I'm no fan of Philthydelphia, but Philly's cops finally get one right.

Oh, and if you think this is "just another hypocrite who is xian-bashing," let me Google "Michael Marcavage" for you.

Nocturnal Light (Camp Humphreys, Rep. Korea) - Email Me

That's one of the most one-sided news stories I've ever seen. They never even asked the police why this guy was arrested.

I would have more respect for World Nut Daily if they just declared themselves to be a right-wing Christian news site. Their pretending to be nonpartisan is an insult to the intelligence of anyone who happens to read any of their articles.

If he was harassing others during his religious harangues that might bring the police onto him- that would be understandable. If he was allowing people their peace and not forcing himself on them that might be another matter. While I would not want to be followed by one of his ilk trying to convert me against my own will, he does have a right to his beliefs and may not deserve harassment by police.

Slow Down Jun 5th. at 6:41:21 pm EDT

WitchPoet (Claremont, California) - Email Me - Web

This article had ot one detail that would be needed to know if this man's claim is frivilous or not.
I am sick to death of all the so-called "enlightened" self-proclaimed Pagans
who show no less injustice to Christians than any Christian has ever shown to THEM PERSONALLY.
I turn my back on those who feel that ANOTHER groups crimes have condemned any and all members of that group to an eternity of disrespect and injustice.
I am especially sick of hearing the same self righteous EVIL justifications coming out of the mouths of "Pagans" as I have EVER IN MY LIFE heard come from so called "Christians".
For the very same reasons that many "Pagans" would find being called Christian an insult I am starting to find the public image of Pagan to be one I want nothing to do with!!!!
I read this article once, twice, three times and found nothing that said who was in the wrong, the man or the city. Given Phillys history I would not give them a by on being the culprit without evidence. This is the City of Brotherly Block Burning after all.
the absolute sickest part of this whole nauseating affair is that if the article was rewritten to portray a Pagan or gay man hassled for BLATANTLY interfereing with a Christian service the same folks that damn this man would praise the Pagan or gay. WAit a minute that happened with the gay group that vicsiously interupted a service. The hyper-"liberal"s APPLAUDED!!!
Just like the Muslims who danced on 9/11 the hyper-PC will celebrate hatred and always, always take the Christian to the the one in the wrong.
This article and the comments are why I long since turned away from identifying with ANY organised ideology.
Partisans suck, no matter what cause they follow!!!!

And Again, Jun 5th. at 4:19:38 pm EDT

Oakwind (The Army, Maryland) - Email Me

we have another example of a religious jerk trying to hide his bigotry and hatred under the guise of freedom of speech and religion. I really wish that these people would stop abusing these rights and thinking that they are the only ones that should have them. The right to freedom of religion simply DOES NOT include the freedom to proselytize or teach hatred, no matter how much this scumbag wants it to. If this were the case, then why couldn’t pedophiles form their own religious group that includes “indoctrinating” children (kind of like Sunday school,) and have it protected under the right to freedom of religion? The answer is simple – it violates the rights of someone else, just like proselytizing does! While I have no idea why this man was “roughed up,” I can take an educated guess that he was violating the rights of others or not following the rules that he is required to follow in the exercise of his rights and calling it “religious practice…”
