New Local Network Welcomes Witches, Pagans And Others

Author: Kathy Samudovsky   Source: Pittsburg Post-Gazette (PA)

Title: NEW LOCAL NETWORK WELCOMES WITCHES, PAGANS AND OTHERS

Even as a child, Je'Amour P. Matthews knew her life path would not be mainstream.

While staunch Roman Catholic parents were teaching her about that church, she said, some maternal aunts were secretly grooming her to be the family's next strega -- Italian for female witch. It made for an interesting childhood -- with memorable Sunday services.

"I was dragged to church relentlessly. Any time I could retaliate, I would," recalled Ms. Matthews, of North Braddock.

"Once when I was 9 or 10, I waited until the vestibule was absolutely packed and acted like I was going to bless myself. Then when I dipped my hand into the holy water, I let loose a roll of Alka-Seltzer and started to scream, 'It burns! It burns!' I was such a rotten child,' " she said.

Today, Ms. Matthews, 49, said she is a modern-day witch and proud of it. She said she practices a traditional form of witchcraft called Italian Stregheria, a nature-based religion whose followers worship the forces of nature personified as gods and goddesses.

I'm going to have to remember that one!

Anyway, good luck with that trademark, especially if you get it approved. I can just see a bunch of "/b/rothers" discussing it now...

Black Hats Oct 29th. at 5:49:45 pm EDT

Dana Corby (Anderson Island, Washington) - Email Me

The Black Hat Society has been around awhile, and so far, nobody has made any connection to anything about hackers. But from another article about them (the original chapter) last year, they do seem to be pretty superficial. As a certified Old Broad, I kinda like the joke on the Red Hat Society, though.

Most people interviewed by the press will either not make a distinction between their brand of Craft and the Craft as a whole, or the journalist will leave all that out as making things too complicated. No way to know what was actually said but from my own experience I'll bet there's little resemblence.

What Arrogant Jerks Oct 29th. at 3:58:25 pm EDT

Terry (Irvington, Virginia) - Email Me

What arrogant jerks this article describes. Perhaps all public spokespersons could try a course in critical thinking before shooting their mouths off to media?

Most Wiccans are witches, but to represent all witches as following Wiccan dogma suggests the person making such claims perhaps is not suited for speaking as if a knowledgeable authority.

If these jerks pursue the representations needed to file the discussed Lanham Act based Trademark claim, they deserve Federal felony prosecution for perjury and fraud. "Black Hat" is so well established a term with other meanings, they have zero right to legally coopt it for their own ends. It may be a good inside joke, but will imply to many people that they're criminal hackers, as distinguished from gray or white hats.

Now, about that overdue new book, "101 Recipes to Cook a Fluffy Bunny"....

Nice Article! Oct 29th. at 11:25:19 am EDT

MIght have to look into this group. Wonder if daughters are occasionally welcome. One reason I've refused to even try to hook into the city groups at all over the years was the time I tried, when our now adult son was small, to see about attending a drum circle with him in tow.

A DRUM CIRCLE mind you, not a full blown great rite ritual. If our children are not welcome to at least some of our celebrations, what's the point? and how do we expect to continue on into the future?

So...I wonder if the city pagans have caught up with us suburban/country (UU) folk who include our children, if they wish to be included, in our doings.
