Cats of Colonial San Juan Threatened With Euthanasia

Author: Frank Griffiths, Associated Press   Source: Tampa Bay Online (FL)

Title: CATS OF COLONIAL SAN JUAN THREATENED WITH EUTHANASIA

Stretched across the sun-baked walkways of this city's walled colonial fortress, the cats of Old San Juan long ago became icons, their feline faces splashed across the pages of tourist brochures and coffee mugs.

But the feral creatures are in danger of becoming another faded memory in this city of blue cobblestone streets and pastel-colored mansions built by Spanish colonizers.

The U.S. National Park Service in Puerto Rico has announced plans to trap the estimated 200 street cats and deliver them to animal shelters, provoking outrage among animal activists who say most would be euthanized.

Both Sides Needed For Solution. Jul 31st. at 5:27:07 pm EDT

There are two things that are outrageous. First, that the cats would probably be euthanized wholesale.

Second, that neither side is listening very well to the other side. Which means that in real life, the welfare of the cats is no longer the issue. Ideology is.

For starters, there is a very real potential human health hazard. There may very well be too many cats there. Toxoplasmosis is not something you'd want your baby to have.

Cats spreading their waste in human areas is unsanitary to a medieval degree.

On the other hand, dooming adoptable cats to death is also a very repellent.

Some cats may be useful for catching rats. Both populations need to be controlled, though.

Some good is already being done if there is an adopt a cat campaign. I often get very impatient with the animal rights folks, but a campaign like this is putting their money where their mouths are, and that is absolutely commendable.

The proposal to neuter the animals is also commendable, regardless of whether or not the cats stay there, or are adopted out.

One side almost never has all the answers. Work together.
