Ghost Ship Legend Grows Off R.I. Coast

Author: Elizabeth Zuckerman, Associated Press   Source: Newsday (NY)

Title: GHOST SHIP LEGEND GROWS OFF R.I. COAST

Rhode Island legend tells of a spectral ship that haunts the waters off Block Island, bursting into flame and sinking into the ocean. Depending on who's spinning the tale, the islanders involved in the human drama turned out to be heroes -- or monsters.

The tales hold that the ship is the ghost of one that wrecked on the island's northern point shortly after Christmas 1738. Different versions say the vessel's appearance augurs bad weather and appears on the Saturday between Christmas and New Year's.

And while there's good evidence that a British ship, the Princess Augusta, carrying a load of passengers from territory that would become Germany, ran aground on the island on Dec. 27, 1738, there's accord on little else about the incident.

Cool... Dec 26th. at 12:15:30 am EST

Ya know, I've lived here all my life and Ive yet to hear about this, but I'm not surprised, this little grinda and cabinet eating state has lots of little secrets. Now I gotta go to block island. Oh by the way, around March/April is the best time to visit Newport, for the tourists (no offense) don't come until summer and its MUCH less crowded before then. My town is one of the more popular routes to Aquidneck island, trust me, the traffic is better in the spring.

Blessed Solstice!

Right on. Must be the dead on their way back to Hades. Happy Halloween.

Good Book Dec 25th. at 2:01:46 am EST

by Amethyst Moonshae (California, USA) - wc_xemail

There is a series of ghost story books by Ghost Town Publications geared towards younger readers. One of my favorites is "Ghostly Takes and Mysterious Happenings of old Monterey". As I recall, it has a couple of haunted ship stories. I believe there is also another book called "Shipwrecks and Sea Monsters of California's Central Coast". The series is by Randall A. Reinstedt.

You also might want to look into the history of the Queen Mary in the Long Beach Harbor, CA. For my senior dance we went on a boat that traveled the harbor, and we passed by the Queen Mary...got quite the chill off of that ship!

She Is Still Seen And Heard Dec 24th. at 10:36:09 pm EST

One of my students is from Block Island, and just a few weeks ago she told me that her grandfather both saw the burning ship and heard the screams that come from it.

So it's still there, two centuries later.

There are many other ghost ship stories in New England, for example, 17th-century the Great Ship of New Haven.

Fascinating... Dec 24th. at 7:43:38 pm EST

by Wild Witch (Michigan) - wc_xemail

Anyone know of any good books of ghost ship stories? Although I've never seen a ghost ship I find them *most* fascinating! The old sailing ships are also quite beautiful. For a long time, I've had a recurring dream of a great Viking longboat with the god Frey commandeering, but it flies through the skies, not the water. I don't know what it means, but I want to paint it someday. Doesn't quite qualify as a "ghost ship" though! ;)

I Like It Dec 24th. at 1:29:00 pm EST

Ghost stories are great all year round. The pagan club at school that I belong to has had several good story sessions.
That many sunken ships and ghost stories about the Great Lakes, huh? Interesting. I'll have to look more into that.

Ghost Ships Dec 24th. at 12:10:41 pm EST

by Ashe (TX) - wc_xemail

I always love a good ghost story, but I find the stories of ghost ships the most fascinating. The Great Lakes are said to be the final resting place of over 1, 600 sunken ships and home to several ghost ships.

There's nothing like a ghost story with my morning tea. Thanks. P.
