Magic vs. Mayhem

Author: Andy Smith Source: Providence Journal (RI)

Title: Magic vs. Mayhem
If you crossed a private detective along the lines of Sam Spade or Jim Rockford with Harry Potter, you’d end up with the basic idea behind The Dresden Files, a new series airing on the Sci-Fi Channel starting Sunday at 9 p.m.
Based on the novels by Jim Butcher, it stars Paul Blackthorne as Harry Dresden, a Chicago private eye who is also a wizard. (He advertises as both in the Chicago phone book). Dresden has one foot in each world, the everyday existence we all live in, and the realm of the supernatural.
A word of warning for younger fans of wizardry, or their parents: this show is not aimed at children. The first episode, for example, includes some corpses who have been skinned and a boy stolen from his bed by the Raven Clan, creepy thugs-for-hire in the magical world. (My 10-year-old won’t be watching.)

If you haven't read the book series, don't judge it. My fiance and I have read it and enjoy it. I'm slightly anxious about the tv series, I have to admit, just from what I've seen tv and movies do to great books before. But I am looking forward to it none the less. And remember, just because someone writes a review that makes a book sound cheesy, talk to people who have read it. This is not cheesy. Harry (Dresden, that is) has a dry sense of humor and a rather dark outlook on life, but he lives it anyway and fights the good fight, even when he just wants to go to bed and get some sleep. Or when his girlfriend is bitten by a vampire and refuses to see him anymore. Tough stuff.
Anyway, I say read the books, whether you watch the show or not. ^__^

We have Sci Fi through Dish Network and I went up and did a search to be able to get it on the recording and it isn't listed anywhere. The search came back with "nothing found"
Wonder what's up?

This TV series (and the books) aren't inspired from an famous TV series by Joss Whedon ? I have checked the Wikipedia and seems to me that this "Dresden Files" series of books are more recent than the Joss Whedon TV series, and from what I understand to the articles on the books and the TV series, there's many similiarities between the two series.
I don't have seen both TV series, but I have read various synopsis in my research on influence of popular culture & media on the popular perception of Neopaganism and Wicca, and the similiarites seems many.
Best regards from Italy and Blessed Be, Dott. Piergiorgio.

try reading the books. I've read them all and they're quite good. If you're a mystery fan, they're what would happen if Harry Potter grew up to be Travis McGee. The books actually treat the occult as if were an everyday, if dangerous, tool. The who-dun-it part usually keeps me puzzled to close to the end, which is a feat these days - I've been reading mysteries for 40 years.
The charcters are fairly well drawn, especially the continuing one's. They are written with a wry humor and a considerable skill. The world the writer has created is self-consistant and his magic rules are good. He makes up some of his rules - all writers do-, but then the sticks to those rules.
Those who are Pagans might want to give a small round of applause to a Pagan writer who has achieved a modest success in a large genre market - just like a 'normal' mystery writer. I mean, we alway gripe when we're singled out for being nut's. Give the series and the books a chance..Who knows, you might even LIKE it! As I keep seeing posted here about Harry Potter - IT'S FICTION!

"...Harry Dresden, a Chicago private eye who is also a wizard. (He advertises as both in the Chicago phone book) . .."
"... Dresden has a friendship with Lt. Connie Murphy (Valerie Cruz) of the Chicago Police, who is not aware of Dresden’s powers. Nevertheless, she’ll occasionally bring particularly baffling crimes his way. ..."
This synopsis doesn't say much for the deductive powers of this tv-land police department. And why would a police officer be running baffling cases past some random citizen if she doesn't think he can help? Seriously, I hope it turns out better than it sounds here.

This is for Teens, like NCIS. Constantine did it better.
“He pays a physical and emotional cost when he uses his magic,” Simkins said. “He’s not a bottomless pit of magical activity. He’s fallible and emotional and he can be hurt.”
Why don't they just hire the real thing, and follow his carreer?

I've read one of the Dresden Files novels and my husband has read most of them. They are a fun read with lots of intrigue. Hope the show is as good as the books. I don't have a TV but I don't mind waiting months for Dresden on DVD so I can see it commercial free on my computer.
