The History Of Halloween

Author: Joe Kernan   Source: Warwick Beacon (RI)

Title: THE HISTORY OF HALLOWEEN

If you thought it was Mother’s Day or Easter, you’d better start thinking about Halloween as the second biggest holiday on the American calendar. In 2007, the National Retail Federation (NRF) estimated that Americans spent a record $5.07 billion on costumes, cards, candy and decorations for the holiday, with the average consumer spending $64.82 compared with $59.06 in 2006.

What has been new, or at least become more noticeable about Halloween in the last few years, is the objection of religious fundamentalists who see it as wicked thing.

In a recent “special report,” Costa Mesa's conservative Citizens for Excellence in Education proclaims Halloween nothing less than anti-Christian, according to a story in the Los Angeles Times.

“When the roots of this holiday are traced,” the report contends, “nothing but deadly evil is unearthed.”

I'd love to know where they come up with this stuff? Lets be honest here there is no archaeological evidence to indicate that Samhain was a deity. So where in the world do they get this information from? I guess I better question would be how can people blindly belive this stuff with no evidence to support it?

Halloween IS NOT "anti-christian".

I'm so sick of this tactic used over and over again. "Oh whoa to us christians. Look how we're persecuted against in every way."

It's the same B.S. No different than the christian coalition of Maine going on the nightly news saying that they had the right to be prejudice, because their god is prejudice. Then not even a week later, went back on the news whining about how a gay rights activist was being prejudice against christians by refusing to hire one at a hair salon.

So what they do here is call everything they want to attack “anti-christian” to gain some sort of sympathy from the masses. Like they were in some way attacked first.

Usual xian swill. We already know they're out to slander and libel us at every turn, and if they could get away with it, they'd bring back the "witch hunts." Especially since the fact that incoherent, invalid xian mythology has been proven to be a work of plagiarism.

'The Lord of Death, Samhain'

The first place I saw this phrase was on the Chick Track for Halloween. As we all know, chick tracks for known for their integrity and honesty....

Then you have the Fundie Christians who write books and use each other as sources, justifying their facts as legitimate...Bull Rations!

Simply more of the same. I would really enjoyed reading the info that Kerr Cuchulain put out on groups and individuals like this. It's great to use to educate and disseminate the truth behind these lies. Unfortunately, there are those who want to believe the lies and misinformation as it justifies their beliefs about everything and everyone different, is wrong.

If Halloween Is Inspired By The Devil... Oct 21st. at 3:54:09 pm EDT

...then it is a religious day protected by the First Amendment.

If they really want to get rid of Halloween, these Christians should argue that Halloween is a silly, nonsensical secular holiday that should be crossed off the calendar.

But I don't see them doing that any time soon.

I saw the phrase "nothing but deadly evil is unearthed" I thought "C'mon 'Samhain Celtic God of the Dead'. I haven't seen that yet this year. Don't let me down, people..."

Yup. There it was: (from the article) "The Celts, which included tribes from northern France, Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales and Brittany, believed that on Oct. 31 the Lord of Death, Samhain, would call together all the souls that died the previous year to travel to afterlife during the Vigil of Samhain."

Bonus: (also from the article) "...the old religion, now held to be the ancient and honorable practice of “Wicca.” Men who practiced it were called druids and women were called “wiccans” or “witches.”"

So, just in case we're clear on things- there -is- a Celtic God of the Dead named Samhain, but there are -no- male witches.

(The comments section politely corrects the article.)
