R. I. Program Helps Forest Landowners Get Start in Mushroom Farming

Author: Katie Warchut, Providence Journal   Source: The Miami Herald (FL)

Title: R. I. PROGRAM HELPS FOREST LANDOWNERS GET START IN MUSHROOM FARMING

Some forest landowners in Foster and Glocester are plying a new trade: growing and selling mushrooms.

A Department of Environmental Management program is helping the landowners get the most out of their land by encouraging small alternative ventures.

The grant applicants had to own at least five acres of land, said Greg Cassidy an environmental planner who coordinates the program. They had to decide what crop they would grow, how they would market it and estimate a budget.

Mushroom-growing isn't the only option for forest landowners, but it's been in the spotlight since the DEM led a workshop on the subject last fall, Cassidy said.

Other products could include maple syrup, ginseng and witch hazel, floral greens, or specialty wood products.

I am gladdened by the sight of a state that is encouraging people to keep their forested land. THat is a good thing. Plus the extra money that these small ventures will make will help to defray the cost of owning the land and keeping it undeveloped. This is the way to preserve land and forests. Sell it to private citizens and encourage them to make use of the natural things that live and grow there. I just hope that they are giving classes as well as grants or limiting them in some other way. After all, everyone can get greedy from time to time.
Blessed Be.
Prophet
