Area Wiccans To Celebrate ‘Light Half’ In Seekonk

Author: Kenny Kirwan Source: Pawtucket Times (RI)

Title: AREA WICCANS TO CELEBRATE ‘LIGHT HALF’ IN SEEKONK
Most New Englanders are happy about the arrival of spring, but none more so than members of the Wiccan religion.
Next Sunday at 12:30 p.m., the Circle of Salgion, a coven of the Church of Wicca, will hold a Psychic Fair at the American Legion Hall Post 311 at 350 Fall River Ave. in Seekonk. The event will feature a lecture on witchcraft by Salem's famed witch, Laurie Cabot, as well as merchants, psychic readers and a belly-dancing performance.
Cheryl Sulyma-Masson, a self-described witch of the Circle of Salgion coven and clergy person in the Church of Wicca, explained that the annual event is partly a celebration of the "light half of the year" and a way to educate others about Wiccan beliefs. In addition, the Psychic Fair is an important fund raiser, as local covens are trying to raise enough money to purchase a facility in which to conduct their meetings and spiritual functions.

Hey cool! I used to live near Seekonk! Having moved away before becoming too involved in my path it's nice to see something from that area. However I do agree with the rest of you that the whole reincarnation deal and it being a 'reward' isn't what I've learned from multiple sources. I suppose that's just the way she was taught or she meant it differently...
Also, about the fund-raising idea, I think that phsycic fairs and things of that nature are what draws many people to us. Such powers are used and celebrated in Wicca and other forms of Paganism so I see no problem with showing others that we do it. But I agree that that is definitely not the only way to raise money, but hey... maybe they have; you don't see many articles about canned food drives!

As someone who is originally from Newport, Rhode Island, it's nice to read an article about New England. I have some friends from the area referred to in the article. And considering it's New England, it's fascinating to read a postive article about witchcraft...considering what was done to witches in New England years ago.
My first encounters with witches started in New England. I grew up hearing the scarey stories about a coven operating in the area of North Kingstown, RI, the tale of a ghostly witch who haunted Tonomy Hill Tower in Middletown, RI and I met my first witch (a Wiccan) at a friend's houseparty in Newport.
I haven't been to Salem yet....that's on my list of places to visit someday. And it would be cool to meet Lady Cabot.
I thought it was a nice article in general. A few inaccuracies there, but overall pretty positive.

Yet another person under the mistaken belief that Wicca is Celtic. Maybe someday we'll be as concerned about removing the misconceptions within our own community as we are the msiconceptions the rest of society holds.
And if reincarnation is the "reward" for channeling "correct energy", I wonder what the "punishment" for channeling "incorrect energy" is.

You know... Shameless self-promotion does not help the public image of Wiccans.
Psychic fairs are ways to bilk the populace, but why not do something constructive? You know, blood drive, canned food drive, something like that... Something that makes us look less like King Kev.

A very nice article about Wicca that doesn't paint us as baby-eating devil worshippers. I do question the statement about reincarnation. I was taught that reincarnation is used as a teaching tool not a reward (if that's the case, I'm in BIG trouble ) . Still, it's a good article.

I think that it's really cool to see an article about Wicca/paganism in a newspaper, especially one that seems to do a pretty good job of neutrally presenting it.

Reincarnation as a reward? Sounds far too much like "heaven" as a reward. I sure wish some Wiccans would leave their Christianity at home.

The goal is to "be the best person you can be, " said Sulyma-Masson. Any evil that exists is acknowledged to be the result of"incorrect energy" that people may have in their lives. Those who channel their positive energy will be rewarded with reincarnation, she said.
In all the years I've practiced Wicca none of my teachers has ever taught me that reincarnation was a "reward" for being the best person you can be. Reincarnation is simply a working of the natural laws and not all religions view reincarnation as something positive.
