Bill Suggests To Local Governments How To Hold Legal Prayers

Author: Seanna Adcox, Associated Press Source: The State (SC)

Title: BILL SUGGESTS TO LOCAL GOVERNMENTS HOW TO HOLD LEGAL PRAYERS
Legislation meant to guide local governments on how to legally pray before meetings was advanced Thursday by a Senate panel.
The proposal is meant to clear up confusion over what kind of public prayer is considered constitutional, as per rulings from the U.S. Supreme Court, said its sponsor, Sen. Chip Campsen, R-Isle of Palms.
"The content of the prayer in [sic] not important as long as it's not used to proselytize," said Mike Johnson, an attorney for the Alliance Defense Fund, a national group that aims to defend the First Amendment. "Don't come to the podium and make an alter [sic] call."

A legal prayer is in a church-or a back room at election time. Not on the Public's dime. It's a shame that politicians who make the laws can't follow them. But then, I suppose it's the double standard one is forced to accept from such buffoons. I say that if they want public prayers-then, by all means, their own deity (or churches) should be paying City, State and Federal taxes as well. Then they'll have an equal footing with the rest of us.

I'd like to thank Darla Wynne for her courage and persistence on this issue. As a born and bred South Carolinian, I know how much hot air and bombast she must have endured to get this far and how much more must pass before the politicians finish their grandstanding and settle for a sensible moment of silence. It will happen eventually, they just have to ruffle their feathers and crow enough to satisfy their constituents.

In a moment of silance, if somebody spoke a prayer ? That's what I would do if I were a fundie. At the end of the moment of silance I would say, OUT LOUD, Dear Lord Jesus, I ask your blessing on this our past moment of silance. AMEN. That would negate the moment of silance, wouldn't it ?

for governments to hold prayers. The First Amendment specifically says: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;" Having any sort of prayer is establishing religion there. It does not matter if the prayer is done to a specific deity or not, prayer is still establishing religion. Not everyone believes, such as atheists and agnostics, thus the only way to treat all equally is not to have prayer as part of the meetings. If a city council wants to have prayer, they should do it before the session begins, do it unofficially. Once the meeting begins, no prayer should take place of any sort.

a moment of silence is about as good a happy medium as anyone is going to come up with, except to exclude the idea completely of prayer. Can't say I have a problem with a moment of silence, because it does not advocate one religion over another and one can say a prayer to whatever deity they choose. But thats just one pagan's opinion.
