Witchcraft Made Me Steal Beer, Man Tells Deputy

Author: Island Packet Source: Island Packet (SC)

Title: WITCHCRAFT MADE ME STEAL BEER, MAN TELLS DEPUTY
A 26-year-old Hilton Head Island man was charged with shoplifting after stealing a can of beer from a gas station and then drinking it right outside the door, authorities said.
When confronted outside of Kangaroo Express, 71 Mathews Drive, at 2:15 a.m. Thursday, the man appeared confused. He then charged at a Beaufort County sheriff's deputy, causing the officer to draw his pistol, according to a report.

It must be a slow news day. The guy was drunk on clearly on cocaine. If the police have any brains they'll just do their job.

Cause that white powdery substance found on his nose was probably not powdered sugar. Somehow I don't think his defense will play in court.

He may have been referring to the idea that someone had 'put a root' on him. The old Gullah culture is still very prevalent on the poor end of Hilton Head.
Here is a great book on the subject, "High Sheriff of the Low Country": [Web LINK]
and another, Blue Roots: African-American Folk Magic of the Gullah People

"the devil made me do it", the "twinkie defense", witches made me do it, my invisible friend made me do it.... I suppose the naughty Witches made him snort the coke too? How great is that? He is being persecuted all because of someone else!
It's interesting that even the courts seem to buy these defenses. I know (having lived in a nest of lawyers for many years and having asked this question a lot) that the defense is supposed to do whatever they can to make sure their client gets all the protections they can when accused of something. However, this seems to have translated to the general population as a restatement. Be your own defense and blame anything and anyone you can for your actions and you don't have to own a bit of responsibility for doing dumb stuff, evil stuff, other stuff. Heck, it may have worked with your Mom when you were little. Maybe the nice cop will believe you now? Maybe even a jury will feel sorry for you if you land in court?
I guess I should apologize for my cynicism but I have a lot of trouble with the concept of 'justice' anymore. One thing I like about living in my Witchy world is that I own the outcome of my decisions. I don't even begin to claim to make the best decisions every day but I do try to figure the impact on others and possible outcomes. Especially so for the decisions that affect me directly. And, no, Witchcraft does not make me think that. It comes from observation and thinking.

*The rest of his comments were "incoherent and incomplete," the deputy noted.* That should say it all. The lesson of this story: Leave the beer alone unless you're buying it yourself.

Like all good Christianists, this fellow just cannot conceive of the even remote possibility that he himself was responsible for his actions.
Just another version of "the devil made me do it."

Yeah, cocaine sure did a spell on him... but it had nothing to do with witches! LOL
