Marion City Officials Planning To Suspend Blue Laws

Author: Jennifer Bartell Source: South Carolina Now

Title: MARION CITY OFFICIALS PLANNING TO SUSPEND BLUE LAWS
The City of Marion is set to adopt a resolution that would allow retail businesses in the city to open at 10 a.m. on Sundays in December, Marion Mayor Bobby Gerald said Friday.
On Thursday, Marion County Council failed to pass second reading of an ordinance to suspend the state's "blue laws."
"The blue law is obsolete" and should be "abolished," Gerald said.

| Not Just Obsolete, But UnConstitutional | Dec 8th. at 11:42:57 am EST

Considering Walmart's history, it's peculiar how they appear to be the trigger for this local effort to suppress illegal state laws.
Blue Laws are rooted in the Puritan dogma retained in the Calvinist segment of the split which resulted in the liberal United Church of Christ (which hosts some programs jointly with Unitarian-Universalist Association these days) , and Church of Christ, Congregational. In colonial times, and in some cases like Connecticut until 1818, that church was the theocratic government, and behind the religious dogma driven laws recorded on blue pages of law books, leading to their colloquial naming as "Blue laws".
That history, as the fundamental root of such laws, leaves them not just obsolete as these local politicians suggest, but inherently unConstitutional and outright illegal to retain since the 14th Amendment added Incorporation Doctrine and extended the Bill of Rights to restrict discrimination by states as well as Feds as of 1868.
It's about time to take out that trash.

I don't think Iowa has laws governing the hours a business can be open on Sundays, but it is illegal to sell cars on Sundays or to sell alcohol before 8 am on Sundays.
There may be towns with city ordinances about business hours. I used to live in Sheldon and while I don't believe there is an ordinance about it, the local pressure can be just as restrictive. Years ago the local Pamida store decided to be open on Sundays and they were picketed.

Errapel (Lowestoft, England) - Email Me - Web

Here in England we still have laws governing sunday opening times. Shops over a certain size arent aloud to open for more than 6 hours, so the '24 hour' tesco down the road closes at 10pm saturday night (yeah weird) opens again at 10am sunday, then closes at 4pm. And most shops shut on sunday on principle. It seems to have nothing to do with religious belief, the congregations of the local churchs are still as small as ever. And it seems silly to close the tesco for a few hours one day a week, when they're open almost perminatly the rest of it. I mean they have staff in all the time, round the clock, I've been in at midnight before, all they need is one person on the till.
