Great Falls To Head To The Polls Tuesday For City Election

Author: Charles D. Perry Source: The Herald (SC)

Title: GREAT FALLS TO HEAD TO THE POLLS TUESDAY FOR CITY ELECTION
Great Falls' municipal election is Tuesday, with four seats on the Town Council being decided. One of the races is for an unexpired term.
A dozen candidates are running, including a former mayor, a school resource officer and the Wiccan priestess who sued the town in 2001, claiming Great Falls violated church and state separation by using the name Jesus Christ in prayers.

Christopher Blackwell (Deming, New Mexico) - Email Me

I have followed the situation at Great Falls and Wynne for several years and have written a number of articles over at ACTION, the newsletter for Alternate Religions Educational Network [AREN]. Anyone that would like more detail can get PDF copies back to the first issue and gain a good background of the situation. They are free and you do not have to be a member to get them.
So I looked forward to see the results of the election on pins and needles. I am interested not only in the election but to see if things have calmed down enough for her not to have any more problems.
Personally I doubt I could have stayed in a place where so much trouble came my way, and I hope things have come t the point that she can be left in peace. There are some people in Great Falls that have come to appreciate her shear gumption and refusal to be frightened out of town. I wish her the best and admire her ability to survive under the conditions she has survived and still have the guts to run for the town council and try to change the problems that the town has suffered for so long.
Great Falls was a mill town and when the mill closed it suffered a collapse of its economy that led to many of the past and present problems. I hope that there can be a change in its luck. I hope that there can be a rebuilding of hope for its future. Suffering can wear down and bring out the worst in people. If there were jobs for its people I would bet you would see a wonderful transforation for the better.

Mysteries Child (Garfield, Arkansas) - Email Me

I think most small towns are probably corrupt to the core (and most large ones too, for that matter) . I guess that, when a place is fairly homogenous and everyone knows everyone else, it's pretty likely that a group of people will get set on using power to make everything their way, and that politics will work on the buddy system to a gross extent.
It's not just "good ol' boys" who do this. They're just the ones that tend to use it to do things that are offensive to *us*. I'm saying that in some halfhearted defense of quite a few of my good ol' acquaintances, whose hearts are basically good even if their heads can be somewhat thick.
While I still disagree with the way the ruling turned out, and I think she got used as a pawn for someone else's agenda...
...I do have to applaud Darla Wynne for having the guts to stay and to fight this bleeding bullsh*t. I don't know her all that well, having only corresponded with her once or twice, but if she's a thinker (as opposed to a crusader) as well as a fighter, she could be very good indeed for the town.
If I was there, I'd vote for her. I wish her the best of luck.
'Cause [God] knows *someone* needs to be good for Great Falls.
