License Plate Lawsuit Elicits Hate Mongering

Author: Columbia Free-Times Source: Columbia Free-Times (SC)

Title: LICENSE PLATE LAWSUIT ELICITS HATE MONGERING
The General Assembly passed a flurry of religious-themed bills toward the end of the recently concluded legislative session. One of the more controversial bills legalized license plates featuring a cross in front of a stained glass window next to the words “I Believe.”
While arguments put forth by supporters and opponents of the bill have received media coverage, one issue that hasn’t garnered a lot of attention is harassment opponents of the bill have faced recently.

I was laughing as I read this, shaking my head. Come on, this is getting rather stale. This sort of blatant proselytizing has been going on for some time down there. State issued plates should have no business whatsoever promoting religion, or in this case, one over many. I definitely agree with those who said either respect everyone's faiths by letting them have their own plate or have none at all. A thought had crossed my mind about having a contest to have plate designs for all the different faiths. It would be interesting to see what kind of reaction comes out of it; if anything, it would be a subtle example of the kind of religious hatred it elicts from the ignorant yahoos. I'd love to see other religious groups stand forward and demand to have their own religious plates. When they get denied, I say raise the biggest vocal protest and not stop until something is done. This is all in the same sort of vein as the Kathie Lee debacle. We, as pagans are here to stay. Maybe some of this country hates and fears us out of willful ignorance, but we need to let the public know we are just as human as everyone else and have the rights to be respected. We need to stop being ostriches with our heads stuck in the sand. I say fight for our own pagan plates. And I stand with all my fellow pagans down South who have to put up with such rampant stupidity. I'm there with you in spirit. Don't ever give up fighting for what you believe in.

I'm really more a fan of stupid over-priced vanity plates for all, rather than for none...
...but I also acknowledge that what's on my car is a plain old standard issue incredibly ugly Arkansas plate, and more bumper stickers than good taste allows.

people can purchase a "vanity plate" for their car at the malls. From what i can see, this is just a way that the state is doing to make more money from them. IF the state wants to make them, then they should have all faiths symbols on each plate. That way no one is left out. If all are being represented on one plate, no one can complain about it being unfair.

...to approve all religions and subsequent plates, so it's easier to have none. You don't need to advertise your faith with a license plate, anyway.
A bumper sticker will do just fine.

there would be absolutely nothing wrong with it if they had such a plate for every faith and religion. the sad thing is that they have issued only plates involving the christian faith, as if sanctioned by the state of north carolina, or was it south carolina? well.... i was once a christian, and they tend to see things in a very one-sided manner. "we are the only way." thus, in their eyes, to allow plates of other religions would be to make people suceptible to other ideas, and thus hell fire and damnation. however, they do mean well. im sure that mainy of us witches were once devoute christians. i remember. they r misguided, i think. it is wrong to have only one faith. yes, the situation is screwed. but, hey. as long as we are fighting for our rights, we r going to be alright. Here's an idea: why dont we petition that state to issue a pagan plate? if they say no, than they have proven they r not being fair, giving them a bad show for the trial or lawsuit. yet, if they did. we'de be screwed on the lawsuit. but, isnt it a cool idea to have such plates? lets all try to get pagan plates! yay!!!

...time out! All or none, all faiths or no faiths. Personally, no faiths should be on a plate. *shrugs* That's what they made the little fish for and bumper stickers too. If that isn't enough.....too bad.
Also, when you buy a specialty plate, the proceeds always benefits a group.....just where is this money going to? What mega church is the lucky one? Will the little backwater church get the same funds? Yet, another unanswered question that isn't addressed here.....where does the money go?

I personally prefer that plates be limited to the standard gibberish given to us all or that they promote charities. Afterall, I've seen some pretty obscure ones that I find myself trying to decipher. However, if we ARE going to allow vanity plates with religious messages, let us involve EVERYONE. Even involve atheists and Elvis worshipers. All or none.

When the state disided to issue license plate featuring a symbol of only one religion , and not any other religion, that is the state recognizing one religion, which is a complete violation of our constitution. I can see this law being stuck down very easily. People of other religions should stand up and fight this blatant christian effort to infringe on our rights and push thier religion in this way.

... was approved, therefore by definition they are establishing a governmental link with Christianity. Unfortunately this is a slippery slope, because the government cannot forbid *any* religious plate (no matter how offensive) . If the government restricted certain plates, in essence they would prohibiting the free practice of religion. Therefore it is easier to have no religious plates, because after all aren't Christians supposed to give God what is God's and give Caesar what is Caesar's.

WitchPoet (Claremont, California) - Email Me - Web

The fact that other groups can also apply for plates obscures the actual intent behind this type of plate. What this move amounts to is an attempt to institute a gang-land type flagging system to make each citizen declare their afiliations. Then the majority can selectivly target the minorities with whom they disagree. They claim fairness but discount the fact that most minority religious do not WANT to advertise themselves in the dear, charming, oh so "civil" South. The message is "stand with us or where we can see you clearly." The only other option is to hide in the shadows. From I Believe plates to prayer at high school football games it has never been about religion, it has alwyas been about power and the naked excercise therofe by an elite.

They are not fearful of proving their hatemongering in the name of jayzus again...and again. South Carolina was the first state to seceed and is the last state to succeed. In many ways. I work with fundies and it makes me ill at times but I provide balance. Xianity is only retold stories of Egyptian lore. I suggest communal living for xians or at least mandatory home schooling. My dad asked me to visit his church again. I said I would if there was going to be entertainment such as faith healings and pulling people out of wheelchairs. No such luck. Not even free food.

Unfortunately, Favoritism "is" what it's all about- and it is the unreasoning fear that somehow they will be in a minority- or will go extinct that keeps them shoving those symbols in every corner that they can and trying to elect laws to protect themselves- by inflicting them on everyone else. They wouldn't want any additional symbols, as religious egalitarianism is really anathema to them. They actually want to have these as a state plate-with everyone required to have them. But for now, they'll settle for those vanity plates and work from there.

People called the leader of a group for Separation of Church and state the antichrist? What a pitiful defense on their part. Though it only proves that they really are after a "Christian nation".
Overthrowing the very constitution their forefathers wrote.. So much for "Honour thy Father and Mother"!

If people are sending out hate mail to those who are against Christian plates, they are not following the teachings of Yeshua Bar-Joseph.
Then again, I would also say that my experience has proven that people of faith who cannot tolerate people of different paths have a problem: their faith is very weak.
I'm wondering, though. What if some additional symbols were proposed? Would they approve?
One way to de-fuse the issue would be to make it possible for a variety of faiths' plates to be available. I wonder what the state's response would be? I think they'd be over the proverbial barrel. But a series of faith plates (Wiccan, Asatru, Druidic, Buddhist, Hindu, etc.) would be a way of avoiding the "establishment clause" issue.
