That Old Black Magic Has Long Cast A Spell On The Lowcountry

Author: David Lauderdale   Source: islandpacket.com (SC)

Title: THAT OLD BLACK MAGIC HAS LONG CAST A SPELL ON THE LOWCOUNTRY

Voodoo roots run deep in the Beaufort County mud, but they seem to be sliding away.

The long, black veil was lifted again last week, however, as The Associated Press reported a death at Beaufort Memorial Hospital. The reclusive voodoo priestess who inspired one of the most memorial characters in the novel "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" was dead.

John Berendt said in the story that said his character "Minerva" was an accurate portrayal of Valerie Fennell Boles.

Minerva took readers into a dark corner of a mossy Savannah grave yard. She went with antiques dealer and murder suspect Jim Williams to cast a spell on the prosecutor who'd charged him in the death of a lover.

Hoodoo Not Voodoo May 15th. at 5:39:37 pm EDT

Lady-hearted Mojo (Irving, Texas) - Email Me

This article makes the same mistake most people make regarding Hoodoo and Voodoo. The woman portrayed in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was a Hoodoo practitioner also known as a Conjurer or a Rootworker, not a "Voodoo" priestess. Likewise, the people mentioned in the article ie: Dr. Buzzard and Sheriff McTeer, where also Conjurers. While more Neo-Pagans are discovering Hoodoo, the majority of practitioners are Christians.
Hoodoo is not a religion in any way, shape or form; it's one of several traditions of American folk magic, but it is still a deeply spiritual with an inseparable connection to Christianity.
Voodoo/Vodou, on the other hand, is a religion. The spelling of word denotes what flavor is being discussed. "Voodoo" is the religion as it practiced in the Mississippi River Valley and most notably in New Orleans. "Vodou' denotes traditional Haitian Vodou, and "Vaudoun" denotes the African form still practiced in western Africa. Each form of this religion is different with "Voodoo" being the most different of the three.
