Woman Accuses Husband Of Witchcraft, Child Abuse

Author: WYFF Source: WYFF (SC)

Title: WOMAN ACCUSES HUSBAND OF WITCHCRAFT, CHILD ABUSE
A Williamston man is facing neglect and sexual exploitation charges after his wife said he abused their children and that he is "deeply involved in witchcraft."
Christine Starnes, 25, said one of the instances of alleged abuse was recorded by her husband, Scott Darrell Starnes, 32, with a video camera.
Police said that the tape gave them probable cause for a search warrant, but not for child abuse charge.
Investigators said that Christine Starnes also reported that her husband was studying witchcraft. A Williamston police sergeant confirmed through investigating e-mails and Web sites that Scott Starnes had enrolled in school of witchcraft and had been looking up information on how to cast spells, do evil and "banish a troublesome person."

I'm having trouble with the child porn aspect. Based on everything else (and that admittedly is limited,) my first instinct is that the wife engineered that one. I don't know any families where a computer is limited to one sole user....unless it's reserved for a business, and even then that's rare. Not saying it isn't done, but it really makes me look twice at the whole thing.

Troubled people often marry, even if their individual problems are very very different (like comparing apples to oranges) . It's clearly evil to conflate child abuse with minority religion (s) or practices. Pedophilia is also clearly evil.
It's highly likely that a pedophile and a creedist marry and then create one ugly nasty disgusting confusing divorce that makes one wonder if someone other than either parent would do better to raise the kid.
If one wants a mate of good character, one should be a person of good character. That and it's best to live a life well examined than this type of damage control involving children and generations.
And it doesn't hurt to recognize the warning signs of abusers or to study the power wheels (equality vs. abuse) . Really.

as much as I blame the wife for being crazy.
However, I won't defend this gentleman if they found kiddie porn on his drive. That's just bad, bad, bad.

...Doesn't make one Pagan. Or Wiccan. People shouldn't assume that. It sounds to me like at most it's another case of someone being 'deeply involved in....' ....Online mail-order spells.
There's a tendency to presume that if there's a book on Paganism in the house where an alleged criminal lives, obviously the person must be Pagan and the presumptive Paganism either led to the alleged crime or is a symptom of that mentality.
While, certainly, some actual child abusers are interested in things that may make them feel 'powerful' ...Usually the religion, especially with all the personal responsibility and Things Bigger Than You is the *last* thing such types are going to stay interested in for long.
People in psychological turmoil will *often* go looking for religion in one form or another: while there's certainly a double standard involved: if a Christian book is around or someone converts in prison, it's considered a good thing, and that obviously a criminal has tried to 'find God' and redeem himself the bias tends to lead people to assume, on the other hand, that if someone in prison wants Pagan materials, then obviously many Pagans are criminals.
We shouldn't leap to the same kinds of conclusions, ourselves, when these stories come up. Chances are the folks involved are pretty clueless, and obviously some find it very useful to cry 'Witch!' in domestic-related proceedings.

The only thing that raises a red flag for me are the alleged comments about the 'burden' of having children and the alleged choking/tickling events. All quite separate from the guys belief system. No clue why they seized craft items *shrug*.
I agree that most of this is trouble stirred up by angry divorce proceedings. Of course, were he a Christian, his practices would be above reproach...

Whether this man is guilty or innocent, his Witchcraft had nothing whatsoever to do with it and should have been left out completely.
Every single time Paganism is brought up in a case like this, it gives all of us a bad name. A lot of people in the US don't know any "out" Pagans. They base their perceptions of us on the media, and when the one sicko that happens to also be Pagan appears, they assume all of us are like that. Because those people are the only Pagans they've heard of.

But it seriously looks to me - by the list of items taken - that he has certainly been targeted for religious discrimination.
Everyone needs to read that pdf file - it looks like they took his witchcraft 101 and herbal healing supplies.
WHY?
Would they take a bible if another man did something similiar?
Witchcraft is not illegal - did a judge sign an order to take that stuff? WTH?

When a divorce looms, especially one that is inimical all sorts of accusations may abound, usually based on half lies and kernels of truth. I hope most of this at least, is a fabrication. Worse though, if kids get caught in the middle, prevarications may become worse. I hope this can get sorted out properly.

It looks like the police are letting themselves be played in an amatuerish divorce vendetta. What was probably horseplay is now suddenly "child abuse". The fact that his religion was brought into it and reported as something scandalous says loads about how they do business down there. Would authorities tell reporters that a criminal suspect was also suspected of being a "Papist" or a "practicing Jew"?
None of those herbs is inherently dangerous, and the statement that he "made" her take them? That requires a considerable amount of force. As for the underage porn allegation, that will have to be weighed on the evidence, but that too sounds like it might have been engineered. If its there, who had access to the computer and might have downloaded it? Was there a pattern of it over time or did it just suddenly get downloaded around the time the marital dispute unfolded?

Hoping the abuse is a fabrication by the wife. Other than the wormwood, I didn't see anything harmful on the herb list, but I'm not a qualified herbalist.
I feel somehow less intelligent for reading that article.
