Art Exhibit: Women In Religion

Author: Adam Parker   Source: The Post and Courier (SC)

Title: WOMEN IN RELIGION

Blame Eve.

Before monotheism -- before God the Father created man in his image, then woman from Adam's rib; before his favored kings of Israel married their multiple wives to secure their dynasties; before Christ appointed 12 men as his Apostles -- ancient gods and goddesses mingled as equals, more or less, provoking, protecting or frustrating humankind, and blurring the line between flesh and spirit.

Everything had its gender. The Earth was female. The Sun was male. And every object had its associated gendered god. It was difficult to distinguish between the object and the idea of the object, so most ancient cultures didn't bother to try. Poseidon and the ocean's waves were one.

All deities had their specialized power. Each served its purpose. And men and women paid tribute.
When the Kingdom of Israel emerged, slowly over centuries, polytheism gave way to monolatry (the worship of one favored god without rejecting the existence of other gods) and, later, Hebrew monotheism.

Yahweh clearly preferred to dote on men.

I HAVE TO AGREE.... Aug 26th. at 5:26:47 am EDT

with what a lot of others are thinking.... as much as this art tries to glorify "women in religion" - all you have to do is read the buy-bull and see for yourself how is disses and dismisses women. The 2 favorite words for women in the bible are "whore" and "harlot"
**sheesh* I could just imagine if it was thge other way around and men were called "Whoremasters" and "Pimps" How far do you think THAT would fly? Not very.... I still cannot for the life of me understand WHY women would go for a religion that so OBVIOUSLY hates them....

Love to all

Someone has a dark sense of humor (man or Yahweh?) to assume the last name of CROSSMAN. That is hilarious. But I have to say that regardless of interpretation, it is an obviously brilliant and provocative piece of art. I do find the interpretation revolting, however. Trying to soften the misogynist sting of 'Original Sin'? Really? If that isn't the devil in the details (no offense to Satan) , a poisoning at the very point of conception, then I don't know what is. The greatest mystery of all has to be the legions upon legions of women that fall for Christianity. It amazes me. Definitely hurts them more than it hurts me. Can they not see that?

ooohh ooohh - a Christian who sucks up to women's issues. Somehow a watered down and theologically "safe" version of female spirituality. Points for trying, but points away for backbone and clear thinking.
You can reach many answers by looking under the pebbles on this beach, some of the answers are disturbing, so just stick to the pretty white pebbles and ignore the big ugly rocks and driftwood. And for God's sake, don't move that seaweed - yuck!
Naked women dancing under a summer moon! I can't sleep...

Not Greater, Nor Lesser, But Equal Aug 25th. at 1:57:03 am EDT

History has for some time now been male dominated all right. And women have gotten mad, and heck, we're starting to get even in many cases.

I just hope that this time, humanity as a whole can stop the stupid pendulum. It is not Ok for men to oppress, suppress, or repress women. But it is also not OK for women to think that they need to "win" or "defeat" men to redress the grievance.

We need to strive for equality. Real equality, the kind where sometimes you're an @ss, and sometimes I'm a b!tch, but mostly, we're both Ok people. And behaving less than our best to each other has more to do with a bad day than a societal norm.

We really need to strive for a society where no one cares what gender the child is when it's born. And for at least the first 12 years.. neither does the child.
