S.D. Governor Halts Access To Library's Teen Web Site

Author: The Associated Press   Source: The First Amendment Center

Title: S.D. GOVERNOR HALTS ACCESS TO LIBRARY'S TEEN WEB SITE

Following a board’s decision last week to remove a link to the Planned Parenthood Teenwire Web site from the South Dakota State Library’s site, Gov. Mike Rounds decided yesterday to temporarily yank Internet access to the library’s Web site for teenagers.

The latest move prompted criticism from an intellectual freedom expert, and the earlier decision was fodder for student protests in at least two cities.

“As a parent, I would be very disturbed to have my children connecting to any of these Web sites that are found through the state Web site at this time,” Rounds said yesterday afternoon as links connected to the library’s teen center page disappeared.

“The governor is not the master father of the state of South Dakota,” said Judith Krug, director of the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom. “At least I don’t think he was elected on that basis.”

Is it possible that not every teen in SD is a bible thumping Catholic??? I mean, gee, don't they all remain virgins until marriage, and get their sex ed the day before they tie the knot? And, oh yeah, aren't all the marriages pre-arranged by their parents when they're three months old? Oops, I guess we were wrong. But that's ok, because their's only a bunch of teens running around with STDs and unwanted pregnancies!

Is everyone in this state catholic? I think not. Does South Dakota have an emperor, instead of a governor? It would seem so. Let's ban all websites which don't follow the party line or agenda. Let's keep young people uneducated and more malleable. Makes a lot of sense - NOT! I'm just wondering who's going to pay for all the medical treatment that will be needed for preventable STD's and who's going to raise all the unwanted babies, which will result from such ludicrousness?

i am just saddened by the fact that this country has not advanced since the puritans. we speak of freedom. we speak of constitutional rights. yet, incidents such as this persist.

GO BLIND!

Children are developing sexually, earlier and yet sections of this society insist on pretending that its not happening and that by treating kids like mushrooms, somehow that will keep them from getting in over their heads.

AIDs is increasingly becoming a disease of young women 15-24. Not in Asia or Africa, but here.

Wake up and smell the fatal STDs people! I guess its okay to scream about God's judgement until its your daughter.

I have to go kick something now.

Sex Is Bad...buy Brand X Jul 14th. at 7:58:18 am EDT

by Mike C. (Maspeth, NY) - wc_xemail

The thing that always surprises me about sexuality in this country is the amount of negativity we try to connect to sexuality and teenagers unless we're trying to shove some product down their throats; then it's it's all hip hugger jeans and belly shirts in your face on MTV. Don't even think about sex, unless you're going to buy the next CD of some cookie-cutter teenie-bopper from TRL.

I Wonder.... Jul 14th. at 5:58:09 am EDT

if they blocked all of the search engines too? No, wait, these kids wouldn't know anything about how to find information on Google now, would they?

Sounds To Me Like... Jul 14th. at 12:24:58 am EDT

...someone has a real "only in the bedroom" mentality case with respect to teens who reasonably will still continue to seek out the access to the sites that they want and the way in which they want.

So, to the dubious governor of South Dakota, I aptly grant thee, "official public prude".

It would seem more than not today that people in places of authority are lacking a certain amount of testicular support and affirmity that is needed to be strong and face issues instead of finding ways and reasons to eschew them from the public view and use the guise of "protecting the people". It's all a scheme and a ploy to drive people into the lovely fear that they are used to and comfortable with grasping.

In esssence many in government today are all too happy with allowing prejudice and hatred to become an allowable alternative to responsibility and accountability. It's sick and I'm tired of dealing with it so damn courteously.

More Dictators... Jul 14th. at 12:14:46 am EDT

by Annwyn (Christchurch, New Zealand) - wc_xemail

Had it not occured to the people pulling links that having same links on the library site was a good idea? That way, they can keep an eye on the content, and know that their kids are getting RESPONSIBLE and MEDICALLLY ACCURATE information should they want it! Now, there's no certainty that the teens seeking the advice from the PP will get it, possibly making for very confused and lost young people when they find themselves either pregnant or with an STD. This can lead to depression in some, and lo, the rates of teenage suicide rise.

Just what the world needs, more people dictating what others should be viewing/doing/saying/reading.

Oh No! Jul 13th. at 9:59:17 pm EDT

by KarEEna (Perth, Australia) - wc_xemail

God forbid children should learn about their bodies and the real world! No!!! Keep them ignorant so that when they get an STD they wont know and they will become sterile at best! Keep them ignorant so when they get pregnant, they wont know what to do and will end up with a sickly possibly deformed child instead of a nice clean abortion or a healthy baby. Children dont need to know these things, right? They just sit quietly and watch tv, right?

Some people are morons.

Deal! Jul 13th. at 9:18:34 pm EDT

Like it or not, teens wonder about this stuff and yanking the link isn't going to change that.

Not Surprising... Jul 13th. at 7:29:20 pm EDT

by Redwood (Chicago, IL) - wc_xemail

Hardly the first politician who, in the intrests of pacifying extreme elements of his own base, is guilty of a loud and totally ineffective act. Since I grew up as a good caltholic boy from SD's northern neighbor (North Dakota, for those who have a shaky grasp of geography) , I'm well aware just how conservative the area is.

The truth is, of course, while this will definately mollify many religious conservatives, it's probably going to have the exact oposite effect. Teens are usually rebellious and most likely more technologically savy than the adults. I would hardly be suprised to hear that the PP website will get more hits as a result, especially from SD... :)

No Use In Trying To Enlighten Idiots Jul 13th. at 6:11:49 pm EDT

by Acacia (SD) - wc_xemail

Stupid, isn't it? That's what I get for living in the Bible Belt. This isn't the first idiotic thing the Gov's done, and I'm sure it won't be the last. I'm also sure he'll be re-elected.

I'm getting really tired of people that don't have two brain cells to rub together getting elected to a position of authority.

OK... Jul 13th. at 2:38:22 pm EDT

by Cait (MD) - wc_xemail

All right, I guess teens from SD are not bright enough to go to the library , get on the computer, go to google.com and type in "planned parenthood"? The people who pulled the website for "inapproriate web links" need to get a clue. If the teens need or want to find the sites, they'll do it, with or without weblinks!

Oh God Forbid Jul 13th. at 2:34:51 pm EDT

by Celesta Rain (MN) - wc_xemail

Teens would have access to anything informitave! I mean, we live in wholsome pure South Dakota where teens don't get pregnant and need help! Oh and they don't need to ask someone for health advice either, they don't have a right to know about their own frickin body! Oh my cow, this is really nutty buisness here.
