S.D. House Panel Approves Measure To Make Abortion A Felony

Author: Brad Perriello, Associated Press Source: Aberdeen News (SD)

Title: S.D. HOUSE PANEL APPROVES MEASURE TO MAKE ABORTION A FELONY
Abortion should be a crime in South Dakota if states are given the right to outlaw the medical procedure, a House panel recommended Friday.
The State Affairs Committee unanimously approved HB1249, which would make it a felony to do abortions if Roe v. Wade, the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion, is overturned. The bill would allow exceptions in cases where a pregnant woman's life is at risk.
Rep. Joel Dykstra, R-Canton, the bill's prime sponsor, said it is designed to protect the rights of fetuses in case states are given the right to regulate abortion.

When I was living in Rapid City in the 70's and 80's we had a saying: "Welcome to South Dakota. Please set your wathes back 50 years." It seems that it hasn't changed much since the days when I was what the locals called a "flap".
At the time, there was exactly one doctor in Rapid City who did abortions, and the town was so polarized on the issue that I recall him sitting next to me at a banquet because he knew that I was good for conversation that did not center on his work or his local controversy.
Yes, there might be a market for charter buses and perhaps charter planes also.
When will someone get a clue? The whole idea of pro-choice is "CHOICE". That includes the choice to have the child. So far as I know, nobody is talking about Chinese-style forced abortions. If someone's life is in danger and they choose to continue the pregnancy anyway, that also is a choice, and it's THEIR choice.

If the people in power need a abortion, if they will get one? Im sure they have the money to go to another state and do so.
I wonder what will happen when a child is born that is not of the father of the man in the Marriage?
While I do support people who may want to abort and those they don't. Will they make allowances such free Birth Control for those who need it? Concise and full sex education to avoid the sticky issues?
Oh will the poor who are unable to avoid a trip to another state become the ones to pay the price?

Just like for the seniors going across the border for meds, now we'll have to arrange bus trips to pick up pregnant women who want an abortion to take them somewhere where it's legal for them to get one.
I personally disagree with it, but it's not my place to say give it up after it's born, or you can't have an abortion. Many cultures around the world don't believe a fetus has human life, or that even a baby does, until they're at least a year old. Then they're human and welcomed into the family.
Oy. Just one more way people (we know who) are trying to force their way of thinking down everyone else's throats.
So why is it we never see these people offering to raise the child, or help the mother support it, if she DOES keep it rather than abort? Just wondering....

Every woman who gets pregnant will not necessarily make a great mother. Fortunately, some people realize this and choose to end the pregnancy rather than make a bad situation worse. If a person is not consciously choosing to be a parent, and is not ready, willing and able to devote themselves to that role, they should not take it on. Fortunately, some people realize that.
Even if abortions are made illegal, in one state or all, that will not stop women from choosing to get abortions. Women were getting them when they were illegal before.
At least with abortions being legal, women have a clean, safe facility staffed by health care professionals to go to. It is better for these facilities to be regulated and open.
If they become illegal again, women will have their choices revert back to those people who are willing to operate illegally. In the past, these people were frequently not trained health care professionals and worked in substandard, unsanitary conditions.
We wouldn't like to see that become the norm again, would we?
I readily agree that those of us who do not wish to be parents should practice birth control, and I have done my part. However, making abortions illegal will not stop abortions from happening any more than Prohibition stopped people from drinking alcohol.
