S. Dakota: ACLU Files Complaint Against Winner Schools

Author: Jomay Steen Source: Rapid City Journal (SD)

Title: ACLU FILES COMPLAINT AGAINST WINNER SCHOOLS
The American Civil Liberties Union filed a federal civil-rights complaint Thursday charging that Winner School District has systematically discriminated against American Indian students.
On behalf of 14 Indian families, the ACLU and the attorney general of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe allege that the Tripp County public school district discriminates against Indian children in its disciplinary practices and denies the students their right to equal educational opportunities.
Winner school superintendent Mary Fisher said she had not seen the complaint Thursday afternoon and could not answer questions about it, but she said Indian students have access to all school activities and are treated fairly.
Catherine Kim, ACLU staff attorney, said Winner school administrators and teachers turn a blind eye toward the harassment and bullying of Indian students in the school's hallways and classrooms. If Indian students retaliate, they are charged with assault, she said.

Ander s. Drake (hays, Kansas) - Email Me

These childern deserve better treatment; sinns when is calling the police for minor rule breaking necessary. I got in to all kinds of fights in high school and no one call the police on me or any one else. hell i'm even proud of some of the trouble i got in, it's part of being a teenager. These teachers need to grow up.
