South Dakota Hears Threats Of Tourism Boycott

Author: AP Source: CNNMoney.com

Title: SOUTH DAKOTA HEARS THREATS OF TOURISM BOYCOTT
The superintendent of Mount Rushmore was surprised at first when people from all over the country started calling up to express their opinion about South Dakota's ban on nearly all abortions.
Some callers said they were so upset that they would never visit Mount Rushmore, South Dakota's No. 1 tourist attraction. Others said they were so thrilled that they would make a point of coming to see the chiseled faces of four U.S. presidents in the Black Hills.
On further reflection, Superintendent Gerard Baker decided that the messages from far and wide made sense, because Mount Rushmore is a symbol of freedom.
In an uproar that has taken many South Dakotans by surprise, politicians and state agencies have been bombarded in the past few weeks with thousands upon thousands of calls, letters and e-mails -- pro and con -- from across the country and around the world.

If you choose to go to South dakota, then fill up that gas-tank before you enter the state---and buy just enough to get you back across the border when leaving.
If you need to eat on the way, then eat before you enter the state, and buy ready-to-eat items at the same time. Sandwiches are always an easy thing to make.
Visit tribal areas, if at all possible; buy from their vendors and concessionairres. Stay out of the cities and towns, if possible.
Take a tent; avoid motels and travel-lodges.
Remember: Every single penny denied South Dakota's coffers is a penny towards the cause....

This is an earnest request--does anyone know of any major or minor non-tribal South Dakota exports, like manufactured products, produce, major retailers, etc.? If it was Washington, I'd say screw red apples, or if it was Idaho, I'd say hey, *** large potatoes, but it is them. So if anyone knows of certain industries or products we could boycott to sabotage the non-tribal SD economy, then please list them here, so we can spread the word. Because I don't give a flying rip about presidents carved in stone, and I hate motorcycle rallies, so not indulging in those is already second nature and I wouldn't be missed.

While the Mt. Rushmore monument can be one place, the bigger (and more important in the category of "money for the state) is the giant "Sturgis Motorcycle Rally" next August in Sturgis S.D. The state makes a lot of money off of this rally in the form of taxes on the stuff bought in the process of the event.
Thousands go to this thing. It's huge!
If someone who is part of a group of cyclists who are going up there could put out the word, that boycott may be enough to scare the politicians a bit more.

My first impulse is to scream BOYCOTT BOYCOTT BOYCOTT and cheer as the SD economy tanks even further. But it is tragic if tribal members become inadvertent vitcims. But is there any possibility that might be the solution? If tribal land is sovereign and separate, imagine either progressive outside interests or tribal members themselves erecting several first class hospitals and/or specialty clinics to service the women of South Dakota--on tribal land!. Maybe that's impossible--I really don't know the intricacies of tribal sovereignty, but wouldn't that be an interesting solution. At the very least, let's go buy the governor a 2x4 to go *** himself with.

"Planned Parenthood, which operates South Dakota's only abortion clinic, has said it will decide soon whether to challenge the measure in court or press for a statewide referendum in November."
A referendum would be better as representing Popular Will, and November follows all those Summer Tourism Months.

I've been to South Dakota (many years ago) and it was beautiful. There is more than Mt. Rushmore - especially if you like the great outdoors and the SD terdbird. (Just ask me about that one! LOL) But would I be willing to spend my money now to visit a state so quick to send women back into the middle ages - heck no. I've been wanting to take my kids there to see some of the sights but I think we'll pass.

Why would any family be cheated if they don't go see those monuments? Frankly, South Dakota has little beyond that, that would interest many. I've already seen enough pictures and movies of the monument that seeing the thing in reality would be rather anticlimactic. There are other sights in the US that are more spectacular-- and are natural--- and in states that still allow a woman's choice-- so far. I do not feel that abortion is a good thing, but- until better choices and good sex education exists- not the "biblical" kind- but one that actually does something to inform- I support it-- and the freedom that such a choice would allow. I don't see how a state can call itself free if it bans half the population from a choice that is supposed to be their own.

He states that if a family doesn't come to South Dakota to see Mt Rushmore because of the recent abortion ban that "you're cheating your family, you're cheating your children..."
I say BS. What South Dakota has done is make a mockery of the meaning of the monument. Why go see it now? It's meaningless in this context.
Do I think abortion is a good method of birth control? However, that being said, I don't think the method of legislating it, nor the religious motivations behind the legislation, are exactly what the men whose faces are on the monument, had in mind when working for freedom for our citizens.
