S. Dakota's Abortion Ban Has Sweeping Implications

Author: David Melmer Source: Indian Country Today

Title: SOUTH DAKOTA'S ABORTION BAN HAS SWEEPING IMPLICATIONS
The South Dakota Legislature created a firestorm when it passed a bill that banned abortion with only one exception: to save the life of the mother. It was signed by Gov. Mike Rounds on March 6.
The bill will become law on July 1 unless either a lawsuit or petitioners get the issue on the November ballot. The law will make it a felony for any doctor to perform an abortion unless the procedure is necessary to save the woman's life. It would make no exception for cases of rape or incest.
Banning abortion is an affront to women and denies them the choice over their bodies that the Creator has given them, said Cecilia Fire Thunder, president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe.
''I have very strong opinions of what happened. These are a bunch of white guys determining what a woman should do with her body,'' Fire Thunder said.
American Indian women will be impacted, if the law takes effect, in greater numbers than any other group. According to national statistics, American Indian women are sexually assaulted at a rate 3.5 times higher than all other racial groups. That means there are seven rapes per 1,000 American Indian women.

| Whose Rights? | Mar 26th. at 9:55:18 am EST

The rights of the person who is currently here, alive, and capable of making decisions, that's who. The person whose life will be impacted, that's who. I agree, we are talking about potential, not life here. Also, the Rede, not only doesn't it apply to all Pagans, it is a guideline, not law. If you want written in stone law, become a Christian. As a Pagan, I personally believe in reincarnation. Any life terminated will come back somewhere else. Another thing that irritates me is the assumption that being Pro-Choice is equated with being pro abortion. It's not the same at all. I am against having an abortion, but that doesn't mean I am against a woman's right to choose.

| South Dakota Does Not Respect Life | Mar 26th. at 4:10:36 am EST

Shannon & Richard (couple) (San Jose, California) - Email Me

I had the misfortune of growing up in South Dakota. In 1971, when I was a senior in high school, a Native American man was nearly beaten to death by three white men in Vermillion, South Dakota outside an Elks Club. Although the victim could identify his attacker and there was circumstantial evidence as well, a grand jury did not indict the three men!
As Robert Redford has shown in a documentary, over fifty people were killed in South Dakota in racial violence during the early 1970's. Only one of them was white and the rest were Native Americans.
You see, the state of South Dakota has much more respect for the rights of a fertilized egg then adult human beings! What a bunch of hyprocrits.
I left the state in 1972, after a fellow freshman college student nearly punched me in the face after I objected to his remark about "Indians are not fully human!"

I agree with Fire Thunder. This is an affront to all women in all states, not merely in South Dakota alone. The people trying to get this passed are not interested in women, or children, except to declare open season on us-- to treat women- and children as pawns and political objects in the way they did before Roe vs Wade. This is merely the first steps to the removal of our rights in other ways. These are a people that love to use lofty concerns and arguments in order to justify an ugly sordid arrogant position. this is a Taliban in the making. A Nazi movement in retrospect- in which women were considered nothing more than servants, objects of convenience and baby machines for the creation of future soldiers. The only saving grace where the Nazi movement was concerned was that- those children that WERE wanted, were given very decent care and guarded for later inclusion into the regime, at state expense, while the rest were brutally eliminated. Here, the rules were enforced- but not the care. Until the child was born- it was a problem for the authorities and the church- as it was "a unique and special life,"later- it became a problem for the woman- because once out of the womb- they lost interest when that "unique and special life" needed state money to survive until adulthood. One question more. Are those who are products of rape and incest going to receive any state funds- or any kind of help at all since birth control options will also be eliminated- as a matter of course? Because if not- Then this law ought to be shot down-- along with the people who sent it up. After all, It is easier to punish those who are not allowed to fight back than it is to take responsibility for ones own actions. THAT is true Fundie tradition.

I know of situations that seem to be stupid in the long run, like a mother getting rid of the child, when the father wants them..all because she couldn't give it away! At least it would still be with a parent. I see abortion as a way to save a mothers life, I do not agree, but I will not deny others from doing what they feel right.

Women of South Dakota, harken! Do not have sex with any members of the State Legislature, they don't respect your or your minds and bodies. Use vibrators, use cucumbers or carrots, use your fingers, just don't let one of those XY chromosome carriers (can't call them men, real men respect a woman's right to choose, especially in cases of rape or incest) ever touch you with his penis. They will change their minds soon enough, and if they don't you still won't have to worry about getting an abortion, 'cause you ain't gonna get preggers if you don't have sex, and tell them to sick it in their abstinence only pipe and smoke it.
